Taurus Canada Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Corp. Awarded $10 Million to Advance Integrated Manure-to-Energy Project in Alberta
Taurus Canada Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Corp. has secured $10 million in funding from the Government of Alberta through its Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program. The funding will support the development and construction of a fully integrated anaerobic digestion and carbon sequestration facility that will produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) exclusively from livestock manure.
The landmark project will be developed in partnership with KCL Cattle Company and Kasko Cattle Co., two prominent players in Alberta’s cattle farming sector. Designed as a first-of-its-kind facility globally, the project will combine advanced anaerobic digestion technology with carbon capture and sequestration systems, setting a new benchmark for sustainable agricultural energy production.
Government of Alberta’s Strategic Investment in Emissions Reduction
The funding announcement was made during a press conference held at Kasko Farms Headquarters. The event was attended by several key government and industry leaders, including Honourable Grant Hunter, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas for the Government of Alberta; Nathan Neudorf, MLA for Lethbridge-East; Kelly Ogle, Board Chair of Emissions Reduction Alberta; Phillip Abrary, Chairman and CEO of Taurus RNG; and Ryan Kasko, CEO of Kasko Cattle Company.
At the event, Alberta’s government revealed a broader $28 million investment from the industry-funded TIER program to support six new technology projects. These projects are aimed at reducing operational costs, improving industrial efficiency, and lowering environmental impacts across multiple sectors. The funds will be administered through Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Industrial Transformation Challenge, which focuses on accelerating large-scale technologies capable of delivering measurable emissions reductions while maintaining economic competitiveness.
The Taurus RNG project was selected as one of these transformative initiatives due to its innovative integration of renewable energy production and carbon sequestration within Alberta’s agricultural landscape.
A Pioneering Renewable Energy and Carbon Capture Model
According to Phillip Abrary, Chairman and CEO of Taurus Canada Renewable Natural Gas Corp., the financial support from the Government of Alberta, combined with the company’s own capital investment, enables the project to move forward as a fully integrated renewable energy and carbon capture venture.
Abrary described the facility as a pioneering Renewable Energy and Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project located in the heart of Alberta’s cattle farming region. Through collaboration with KCL Cattle Company and Kasko Cattle Co., the initiative aims to establish global leadership in renewable energy production while promoting sustainable farming practices.
The project stands out because it integrates two environmental solutions into a single facility:
- Conversion of livestock manure into renewable natural gas
- Capture and sequestration of biogenic carbon dioxide
This dual approach ensures that methane emissions from manure decomposition are avoided while also permanently storing carbon dioxide generated during the biogas upgrading process.
Government Leaders Emphasize Innovation and Energy Security
Speaking at the announcement, Honourable Grant Hunter highlighted Alberta’s commitment to expanding energy production while simultaneously protecting the environment. He emphasized that the global demand for responsibly produced energy continues to grow and that technologies like those being implemented by Taurus RNG will allow Alberta to meet this demand while reducing emissions and maintaining competitiveness.
Hunter noted that Alberta is investing in “made-in-Alberta” solutions because of the province’s strong track record of innovation and technological leadership.
Similarly, Brian Jean, Alberta’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, underscored the province’s longstanding identity as an economic engine driven by innovation. He pointed out that Alberta’s responsibly produced energy is in increasing demand globally and that initiatives such as this one demonstrate how economic growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
Advanced Anaerobic Digestion Technology
At the core of the facility is advanced anaerobic digestion technology. Anaerobic digestion is a natural biological process in which microorganisms break down organic material—in this case, livestock manure—in the absence of oxygen.
Taurus RNG will apply its specialized process expertise to optimize this natural decomposition process, ensuring maximum methane recovery and operational efficiency. Instead of allowing methane to escape into the atmosphere—a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions—the facility will capture the biogas produced during digestion.
The raw biogas will then be upgraded to pipeline-quality Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as biomethane. Once purified, the RNG will be injected directly into Alberta’s natural gas pipeline network as a drop-in clean energy source. Because RNG is chemically identical to conventional natural gas, it can be used in existing infrastructure without modification, making it a practical and scalable decarbonization solution.
Carbon Capture and Sequestration Integration
In addition to generating renewable natural gas, the facility will capture biogenic carbon dioxide that is separated during the gas upgrading process. Rather than releasing this CO₂ into the atmosphere, the project includes carbon sequestration systems designed to permanently store it underground.
By combining anaerobic digestion with carbon capture and sequestration, the facility represents a fully integrated environmental solution. This approach not only reduces methane emissions from agricultural waste but also actively removes and stores carbon dioxide, enhancing the overall climate impact of the project.
Transforming Manure Into Clean Energy and Sustainable Fertilizer
The planned facility will process approximately 130,000 tonnes of livestock manure annually. Through anaerobic digestion and gas upgrading, this volume of manure will generate approximately 360,000 gigajoules (GJ) of Renewable Natural Gas each year.
Beyond RNG production, the digestion process will produce a nutrient-rich digestate—a byproduct that can be used as a sustainable fertilizer. This digestate retains valuable nutrients from the original manure but in a more stabilized and manageable form. As a result, the project not only produces renewable energy but also enhances nutrient management practices for cattle operations.
According to project estimates, the annual RNG output will generate enough energy to power approximately 4,500 homes. Additionally, the displacement of fossil-based natural gas is expected to result in emissions reductions equivalent to removing roughly 3,800 cars from the road each year.
Redefining the Value of Feedlot Manure
Phillip Abrary described the facility as a breakthrough in agricultural technology. By transforming a waste stream into a valuable energy and fertilizer resource, the project redefines the economic and environmental value of feedlot manure.
For cattle operations, manure management is both a necessity and a challenge. This integrated solution provides a pathway to convert that challenge into an opportunity—reducing environmental impact while contributing to renewable energy production.
Through its partnership with Kasko Cattle and KCL Cattle Company, Taurus RNG is demonstrating how collaboration between energy innovators and agricultural producers can deliver scalable sustainability solutions.
Construction Timeline and Operational Outlook
The project is scheduled to officially break ground this summer. Construction is expected to progress over the following years, with full operational status targeted for January 2028.
Once completed, the facility will stand as the world’s first fully integrated anaerobic digestion and carbon sequestration facility dedicated exclusively to producing Renewable Natural Gas from livestock manure.
By merging advanced technology, government support, and agricultural partnership, Taurus Canada Renewable Natural Gas Corp. aims to position Alberta at the forefront of renewable energy innovation—while reinforcing the province’s global reputation for responsible and forward-looking energy development.
