Results Yum China Announces Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results

Yum China Holdings, Inc. has announced its unaudited financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2026, reporting strong growth across its operations, continued expansion of its restaurant network, and improved profitability despite a challenging operating environment.

During the quarter, Yum China continued to strengthen its position as one of China’s leading restaurant operators, driven by higher customer traffic, digital engagement, delivery growth, menu innovation, and accelerated store openings across both company-operated and franchise locations.

Strong Financial Performance Driven by Transaction Growth

Yum China’s total system sales increased 6% year over year (YoY), excluding the impact of foreign currency translation, while same-store sales grew 1% YoY. The company recorded its 14th consecutive quarter of same-store transaction growth, with transactions increasing 5% YoY, reflecting continued customer demand and successful efforts to attract new consumer segments.

Total revenues reached $3.1 billion, representing a 13% increase compared with the prior-year period. Excluding foreign currency translation effects, revenues grew 6%.

Operating performance remained strong, with operating profit increasing 14% YoY to $348 million, marking a second-quarter record for the company. Core operating profit, which excludes certain special items, increased 7%.

Yum China’s operating profit margin reached 11.1%, improving by 20 basis points compared with the same quarter last year. This marked the ninth consecutive quarter of year-over-year operating margin expansion. Restaurant margin remained stable at 16.1%, as increased delivery-related costs were offset by operational efficiencies and streamlined restaurant processes.

Diluted earnings per share (EPS) rose 21% YoY to $0.70. Excluding foreign currency effects, diluted EPS increased 14%, while excluding the impact of mark-to-market equity investments, EPS increased 10%.

Accelerated Restaurant Expansion Reaches Record Levels

Yum China achieved a major milestone in restaurant expansion during the quarter, opening 560 net new stores—the highest second-quarter opening figure in the company’s history. The number of new openings increased 67% compared with the same quarter last year.

Franchisees played an increasingly important role in the company’s expansion strategy, accounting for 41% of new store openings during the quarter. As of June 30, 2026, Yum China operated 19,297 restaurants across China, with approximately 18% managed by franchise partners.

The company’s continued focus on flexible store formats, lower-tier city expansion, and franchise development is helping it reach more consumers while supporting long-term growth.

CEO Highlights Growth Strategy and Innovation

Joey Wat, CEO of Yum China, said the company delivered strong results in the second quarter, achieving simultaneous growth in system sales, operating profit, and operating profit margin for the ninth consecutive quarter.

“While the operating environment remains dynamic, our topline growth continued to outperform the industry in Q2,” Wat said. “Same-store sales growth improved sequentially to 1%, led by the 14th consecutive quarter of same-store transaction growth, while store openings continued to accelerate year over year across both company-owned and franchise stores.”

Wat highlighted strong performances from both KFC and Pizza Hut, noting that KFC achieved 7% system sales growth and expanded restaurant margins, while Pizza Hut returned to positive same-store sales growth and nearly doubled its new store openings compared with the previous year.

The company continues to invest in menu innovation and new business models designed to attract additional customer groups and increase sales opportunities. At KFC, new concepts such as KCOFFEE café, KPRO, and car-side pickup services are being expanded to more locations. Pizza Hut has introduced its Pizza Hut Burger Bar concept to create additional sales opportunities and improve profitability.

The company is also strengthening its presence in smaller cities through initiatives such as the KFC Small Town model and Pizza Hut WOW stores, which are designed to increase accessibility and accelerate penetration in emerging markets.

Delivery Business Continues Rapid Expansion

Digital ordering and delivery remained major growth drivers for Yum China during the quarter.

Overall delivery sales increased 26% YoY and accounted for approximately 54% of total company sales, compared with 45% during the same period last year. The growth reflects changing consumer behavior and the company’s ability to integrate digital channels into its restaurant ecosystem.

KFC delivery sales also increased 26% YoY, contributing approximately 54% of KFC’s company sales. Pizza Hut delivery sales grew 26% YoY as well, representing approximately 52% of Pizza Hut’s company sales, up from 43% a year earlier.

The company’s digital ecosystem also continued expanding, with active members of KFC and Pizza Hut loyalty programs exceeding 270 million, representing a 6% increase YoY.

KFC Delivers Continued Profit Growth

KFC remained a key contributor to Yum China’s performance. System sales increased 7% YoY, improving from 5% growth in the first quarter. Same-store sales increased 1%, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of growth, while same-store transactions increased 4%.

KFC opened 335 net new stores during the quarter, including 152 franchise-operated locations. The brand reached 13,789 total restaurants as of June 30, 2026, with 17% operated by franchisees.

Operating profit increased 14% YoY to $332 million, while core operating profit increased 7%. Operating margin improved 20 basis points to 14.2%.

Restaurant margin reached 17.1%, up 20 basis points YoY, supported by improved operational efficiency and favorable commodity costs. These gains partially offset higher rider costs from increased delivery demand and value-focused promotions.

Pizza Hut Returns to Growth Momentum

Pizza Hut also delivered encouraging results during the quarter. System sales increased 6% YoY, improving from 4% growth in the first quarter.

Same-store sales returned to positive growth at 1%, while same-store transactions increased 13%, marking the 14th consecutive quarter of transaction growth. Increased customer visits offset an 11% decline in ticket average as the brand continued implementing its mass-market strategy.

Pizza Hut opened 174 net new stores during the quarter, nearly double the openings achieved during the same period last year. Franchisees contributed 70 of those openings.

The brand ended the quarter with 4,549 restaurants, including 11% operated by franchise partners.

Pizza Hut’s operating profit increased 11% YoY to $51 million, while core operating profit rose 5%. Operating margin remained steady at 8.3%.

Restaurant margin declined slightly by 40 basis points to 12.9%, primarily due to increased delivery costs, value-oriented promotions, and investments in Pizza Hut Burger Bar. These pressures were partially offset by automation, operational improvements, and favorable commodity costs.

Strong Shareholder Returns and Future Outlook

Yum China continued returning capital to shareholders during the quarter. The company returned $402 million through $301 million in share repurchases and $101 million in cash dividends.

For the first half of 2026, Yum China returned $718 million to shareholders, including $515 million in share repurchases and $203 million in dividends.

The company remains on track to return approximately $1.5 billion annually from 2024 through 2026, representing about 10% of its market capitalization as of July 29, 2026.

Looking ahead, Yum China expects to return approximately 100% of annual free cash flow after subsidiary dividend payments to non-controlling interests beginning in 2027. The company anticipates annual shareholder returns of approximately $900 million to more than $1 billion in 2027 and 2028, with returns expected to exceed $1 billion thereafter.

A major strategic milestone is also approaching, as Yum China prepares to become the owner of the Pizza Hut brand in mainland China after operating the business for 36 years. The company expects ownership of the brand to provide greater flexibility, reduce licensing costs, enhance innovation capabilities, and accelerate long-term growth.

With continued expansion, strong customer engagement, digital growth, and multiple strategic initiatives, Yum China remains focused on strengthening its leadership position in China’s restaurant industry and creating sustainable value for shareholders.
