Nestlé Scientists Uncover Bioactive Nutrients for Muscle Health and Longevity

As the global population grows older, understanding and addressing the biological mechanisms of aging has become a pressing priority. Nestlé is leading efforts to tackle age-related health conditions, such as muscle loss and physical fatigue, by exploring science-backed nutritional solutions that promote healthy longevity.

One major focus of Nestlé’s research is combating sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength that accompanies aging. Sarcopenia not only diminishes physical performance but also increases frailty, reducing the overall quality of life for millions of older adults. Through innovative research, Nestlé scientists have uncovered key mechanisms behind muscle decline and identified bioactive nutrients that target and mitigate the effects of aging on muscles.

Nutritional Solutions to Muscle Regeneration

In a groundbreaking study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Nestlé researchers collaborated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – Institut NeuroMyoGène in Lyon and other external partners to investigate how aging impacts muscle regeneration. They discovered that skeletal muscle regeneration depends heavily on local stem cells, known as satellite cells, which repair and grow muscle tissue. Unfortunately, these cells become less effective with age, hampering recovery and muscle health.

To address this challenge, Nestlé scientists screened over 50,000 natural molecules and identified two vitamin B-related nutrients, Nicotinamide and Pyridoxine, that synergistically activate satellite cells. These nutrients enhance muscle regeneration, enabling faster recovery and improved strength even in older individuals.

Dr. Pascal Stuelsatz, Senior Specialist for Muscle Growth and Recovery at Nestlé Research, emphasized the importance of the findings:

Boosting Energy and Muscle Performance

In a second pivotal study, published in Cell Metabolism in collaboration with the University of Padova and other research partners, Nestlé scientists discovered another breakthrough. The study revealed the potential of Oleuropein, a polyphenol found in olives, to enhance muscle performance and cellular energy by targeting mitochondria—the energy powerhouses of cells.

Mitochondria produce the energy needed for bodily functions, but their efficiency declines with age. Researchers found that mitochondrial calcium uptake, a critical process for energy production, decreases during aging and contributes to muscle decline. By screening natural molecules found in food, the study identified that Oleuropein stimulates this mechanism, reversing age-related declines in mitochondrial function.

Preclinical models demonstrated that Oleuropein not only improved cellular energy levels but also enhanced muscle performance and reduced fatigue during aging.

Dr. Jérôme Feige, Senior Expert in Musculo-Skeletal Health at Nestlé Research, highlighted the broader implications:

Expanding the Frontiers of Healthy Aging

Nestlé’s commitment to promoting healthy longevity extends beyond these two studies. Earlier this year, researchers published a breakthrough finding in Nature Metabolism, showcasing the benefits of trigonelline—a naturally occurring molecule—on muscle and cellular health in aging populations. These findings continue to pave the way for innovative nutritional products designed to support aging individuals.

Nestlé leverages its deep expertise in physiology, nutrition science, and cutting-edge research capabilities to translate scientific discoveries into real-world applications. Every innovation undergoes rigorous safety, quality, and regulatory assessments before advancing to clinical trials, ensuring the delivery of tangible health benefits.

From Research to Consumer Solutions

Nestlé’s efforts have already led to the launch of products that incorporate bioactive nutrients to support healthy aging. For example, the Solgar range of nutritional supplements includes solutions like GlyNAC, a patented blend of glycine and N-acetyl cysteine, which helps protect cells from daily oxidative damage and decline. In China, Nestlé introduced Yiyang Active powdered beverages, clinically proven to enhance mobility and muscle health in aging individuals.

A Vision for Healthy Longevity

Healthy longevity remains a critical area of innovation for Nestlé as the company seeks to empower individuals to live healthier, more active lives as they age. By addressing age-related muscle decline and other challenges, Nestlé aims to transform the aging experience through the power of nutrition.

The discoveries around Nicotinamide, Pyridoxine, Oleuropein, and other bioactive nutrients represent a significant leap forward in understanding and mitigating the effects of aging. As Nestlé continues to pioneer solutions for muscle health, these innovations promise to improve the lives of millions worldwide, ensuring not just longer lifespans but a higher quality of life in the years to come.
