Airspan Networks, a leader in cutting-edge software and hardware solutions for 5G networks, and a pioneer in end-to-end Open RAN technology, has been chosen by AWTG Limited (“AWTG”) as the Radio Access Network (RAN) partner for the ambitious England’s Connected Heartland Railways (ECH-R) project. This project is part of the UK government’s broader 5G Innovation Regions initiative, which aims to bring about transformative improvements in connectivity across various sectors.
The ECH-R project is poised to represent a major breakthrough in enhancing connectivity in rural areas and the transportation sector. By leveraging next-generation 5G technology, the project aims to offer seamless mobile broadband connectivity for both railway passengers and operational teams. This initiative is part of a larger vision to harness advanced wireless connectivity to foster innovation, improve economic growth, and address the unique needs of rural communities across the UK.
As the selected RAN partner for the ECH-R initiative, Airspan will deploy its AirSpeed™ 1900 Outdoor Small Cells along crucial segments of the railway line. These small cells will deliver reliable, high-speed 5G standalone (SA) connectivity that ensures consistent and ultra-fast service. This infrastructure will facilitate a variety of mission-critical applications that are crucial for modernizing the railway network. These include:
- Passenger Broadband: With Airspan’s 5G technology, passengers will enjoy uninterrupted high-speed internet access. Whether through direct connectivity to their mobile devices or onboard Wi-Fi, this connectivity enhances the travel experience and meets the increasing demand for mobile data.
- Operational Efficiency: The deployment of 5G will improve operational efficiency across the rail network by supporting vital functions such as onboard diagnostics, train system monitoring, and real-time communication between operational teams. This will enable faster decision-making, improved safety, and a more streamlined operation.
- Trackside Connectivity: The project will also extend network coverage beyond the trains, offering Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to trackside communities. This extension will provide high-speed broadband to rural areas and agricultural operations along the route, enabling better access to digital services and boosting local economies.
Henrik Smith-Petersen, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Airspan Networks, expressed the significance of the partnership, stating, “Partnering with AWTG on this pivotal project highlights Airspan’s commitment to delivering innovative and scalable connectivity solutions. The deployment of our technology ensures robust 5G coverage in some of the most challenging environments, paving the way for a new era of rail transport and rural connectivity.”
The ECH-R project is a key element of the broader efforts underway in the Connected Heartland region of England, which aims to demonstrate the practical viability of commercially sustainable 5G private networks. These networks are designed not only for the railway sector but also for use in rural applications. This deployment is seen as a model for future 5G network expansions across the UK rail system, providing a transformative blueprint for connectivity in these areas.
The successful integration of Airspan’s technology in the ECH-R project will highlight the value of high-performance, cost-effective 5G infrastructure in addressing the distinct connectivity challenges that rural and transport sectors face. “5G technology is set to transform connectivity across the UK, and projects like this are crucial in making that vision a reality,” said David Mintah, Mobile Private Networks Director at AWTG. “We are excited to partner with key providers like Airspan to deliver innovative solutions for seamless rail connectivity.”
Borderlands 5G Innovation Region: Supporting Broader UK Connectivity Goals
Beyond the ECH-R initiative, Airspan is also actively supporting AWTG in the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region (Borderlands 5GIR) project. This project is focused on enhancing connectivity in both rural and semi-urban locations, including places like the Windermere Ferry and Kielder Forest. In this context, Airspan’s Small Cells play an essential role in providing network infrastructure, helping to bridge the connectivity gap in these underserved areas.
The Borderlands 5GIR project will feature a diverse range of Open RAN technologies, demonstrating Airspan’s versatility in offering both fully integrated and interoperable 5G solutions. This flexibility ensures that Airspan can meet the varying needs of different regions and applications, further contributing to the UK’s 5G rollout and the wider push to modernize the country’s connectivity landscape.
Airspan’s involvement in both the ECH-R and Borderlands 5GIR projects underscores its pivotal role in advancing the UK’s 5G infrastructure. By bringing high-speed, reliable connectivity to rural and transport sectors, Airspan is not only enhancing the passenger experience but also improving operational efficiency and expanding digital opportunities for local communities.
These groundbreaking projects, driven by Airspan’s innovative 5G solutions, represent a significant leap toward a connected, technologically advanced future for the UK. As the nation continues its journey toward full 5G deployment, Airspan and AWTG are helping to ensure that no community, whether urban or rural, is left behind.
