Applebee’s Marks 21 Years Supporting Childhood Cancer Research with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Applebee’s® is once again demonstrating its unwavering commitment to the fight against childhood cancer as it launches its annual national fundraiser benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) — a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding cutting-edge pediatric cancer research and providing essential support to families affected by the disease.

This year’s campaign carries special significance as Applebee’s and ALSF celebrate an impressive 21 years of partnership, a milestone that reflects the restaurant brand’s long-standing dedication to making a difference in the lives of children battling cancer. The 2025 fundraising effort officially kicked off today and will run through August 31, inviting communities across the country to participate in multiple ways.

At the heart of this year’s campaign is the debut of a brand-new beverage, the Strawberry Lemon Sunshine. For every drink sold in Applebee’s restaurants during the campaign period, 50 cents will be donated directly to ALSF, helping to fund vital research and patient services. The drink, a refreshing and summery twist on lemonade, is not only a nod to the classic lemonade stand but also a symbol of hope and support for children facing the toughest fight of their lives.

In keeping with tradition, Applebee’s restaurants nationwide will transform into honorary “Lemonade Stands”, creating a bright and welcoming space that invites guests and neighbors to come together in support of a powerful cause. The transformation will include in-restaurant décor, staff engagement, and storytelling elements that help raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer initiatives.

“We’re honored to celebrate 21 years of partnership with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and to have raised more than $18 million to fund lifesaving pediatric cancer research,” said John Peyton, President of Applebee’s and CEO of Dine Brands Global. “At Applebee’s, we truly believe in Doin’ Good in the Neighborhood®, and this partnership reflects that commitment. With the help of our franchisees, team members, and guests, we’re aiming to raise more than ever this year.”

A Legacy of Impact: $18 Million Raised and Counting

Since the partnership first began in 2005, Applebee’s has demonstrated what’s possible when a beloved national brand activates its vast network of restaurants and loyal guests in support of a meaningful mission. Over the past two decades, Applebee’s has raised more than $18 million for ALSF, funding the equivalent of 360,000 hours of pediatric cancer research. These contributions have helped accelerate the development of innovative treatments, supported vital clinical trials, and provided emotional and financial support to countless families across the country.

“Applebee’s is one of ALSF’s most dedicated and impactful partners,” said Liz Scott, Co-Executive Director of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and mother of founder Alexandra “Alex” Scott. “Their commitment to our mission and their ability to mobilize communities nationwide has introduced countless people to our work. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing support, which has helped provide critical resources to children and families while advancing research that brings us closer to cures.”

The Inspiring Origin of ALSF

The origin of ALSF is both heartbreaking and profoundly inspiring. The foundation began with a simple act of compassion from 4-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was diagnosed with cancer before her first birthday. Despite her diagnosis, Alex wanted to help other children like her. In 2000, she opened her first lemonade stand in her front yard, declaring she wanted to raise money “to help her doctors help other kids.”

By the time Alex passed away in 2004 at just 8 years old, her selfless initiative had raised $1 million. Her remarkable legacy lives on through ALSF, which has since grown into the largest independent childhood cancer charity in the U.S. The foundation continues to fund innovative research globally, while also providing programs that support families — from travel assistance and treatment resources to peer support networks.

Applebee’s Commitment to Community: Doin’ Good in the Neighborhood®

Beyond its partnership with ALSF, Applebee’s has long prioritized giving back through its Doin’ Good in the Neighborhood® initiative. For over four decades, Applebee’s restaurants have served as community hubs, using their platforms to support a wide range of local and national causes.

Each year, Applebee’s franchisees host hundreds of fundraisers and events, supporting local schools, community heroes, military families, and even team members facing hardship. These initiatives span across Applebee’s nearly 1,600 U.S. locations and demonstrate the brand’s strong connection to the neighborhoods they serve.

One of Applebee’s most visible and impactful initiatives is its annual Veterans Day program, where participating restaurants honor veterans and active-duty military by serving free meals. Since the launch of this program in 2008, Applebee’s has served over 12.2 million free meals, providing a heartfelt “thank you” to those who serve the nation.

In total, Applebee’s and its franchisees contribute millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours each year through Doin’ Good in the Neighborhood, reinforcing the brand’s mission to be more than just a restaurant, but a reliable community partner.
