Beanstalk AgTech Launches Monsoon Ventures to Accelerate Agtech Commercialisation Across Southeast Asia

Beanstalk AgTech has announced the launch of Monsoon Ventures, a new venture studio based in Singapore that aims to accelerate the commercialisation of agricultural technology across Southeast Asia. Backed by Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG) and Rabo Foundation, the initiative will support founders developing agtech solutions designed to strengthen smallholder farmer livelihoods, improve environmental outcomes and enhance regional food security.

Monsoon Ventures has been established to address one of the region’s most persistent challenges: the gap between promising agricultural innovation and its successful commercial adoption. While Southeast Asia has a growing pipeline of technologies capable of addressing climate resilience, agricultural productivity and supply chain challenges, many solutions struggle to progress beyond proof-of-concept because founders lack access to commercial expertise, capital, market pathways and strategic partnerships.

The new venture studio intends to bridge that gap by providing founders with a combination of investment, commercial expertise and hands-on venture-building support.

Initial Focus on Six Southeast Asian Markets

Monsoon Ventures will initially concentrate on six priority markets: Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. The studio plans to make an initial investment of SGD 1.2 million and is targeting up to eight ventures during its first two years of operation.

Over a five-year period, the initiative has more ambitious plans. Monsoon Ventures aims to attract and deploy significantly more capital and build a portfolio of more than 30 scalable ventures addressing agricultural and food-system challenges across the region.

The focus reflects the significant role smallholder farmers play in Southeast Asia’s agricultural economy. An estimated 100 million smallholders form the backbone of regional food production. However, these farmers are increasingly exposed to climate shocks, fluctuating input costs, fragmented supply chains and other pressures that can threaten productivity and household incomes.

Technology can play an important role in helping farmers respond to these challenges. However, having an innovative technology is only the first step. For solutions to deliver meaningful impact, they need to be commercially viable, adapted to local markets and made accessible to farmers at scale.

Addressing the Commercialisation Gap

Monsoon Ventures was founded specifically to tackle this commercialisation challenge. The venture studio will work with founders to move technologies from development and validation toward commercial deployment.

Its support will extend beyond traditional venture investment. Monsoon Ventures plans to provide capital while also helping founders recruit complementary commercial talent, identify viable routes to market and map opportunities across agricultural value chains.

The studio will also help ventures connect with appropriate investors and strategic partners, including established regional businesses that can contribute distribution capabilities, market access, industry expertise and other resources needed to scale.

This approach is designed to help promising technologies overcome the difficult transition between proving that a technology works and developing a sustainable business around it.

Justin Ahmed, Director at Beanstalk AgTech, said the organisation’s experience in Australia demonstrated the potential of a venture-studio model to accelerate agricultural innovation.

“In the last two years, Beanstalk’s Australian venture studio helped innovators to raise over AU$22M and launch 15 commercial products. In Southeast Asia, the challenges facing science commercialisation are even more magnified, which is exactly why we’re launching Monsoon Ventures here.”

Ahmed added that many innovations designed to strengthen smallholder resilience fail to make the transition from development to market.

“Breakthrough science for smallholder resilience in this region so often dies between proof-of-concept and commercial launch. Monsoon Ventures will bring the strategy, team, and capital to help innovation cross this chasm and reach the smallholders who need it.”

Building on Beanstalk’s Agtech Experience

The launch of Monsoon Ventures represents Beanstalk AgTech’s first venture studio in Southeast Asia. The organisation brings experience from operating the Drought Venture Studio in Australia, as well as eight years of engagement with innovation ecosystems across Southeast Asia.

That experience provides the foundation for a model designed around the specific requirements of agricultural technology companies. Agtech ventures often require longer development timelines, specialised expertise and close relationships with farmers, food companies, distributors and other stakeholders throughout the agricultural value chain.

By combining venture funding with commercial support, Monsoon Ventures aims to help founders navigate these complexities and establish businesses capable of achieving both commercial growth and measurable impact.

Blended Finance Model

The venture studio will operate through a blended finance model, bringing together philanthropic, public and private capital. This structure is intended to support ventures that have the potential to generate commercial returns while also addressing important agricultural, environmental and social challenges.

EnterpriseSG has provided foundational support for Monsoon Ventures, helping the studio develop targeted solutions aimed at strengthening food resilience across the region. The initiative also supports Singapore’s broader ambition to establish itself as a regional hub for agrifood innovation, financing and commercialisation.

Sharon Tay, Director of Food Manufacturing and Agri-Technology at Enterprise Singapore, said successful food resilience initiatives require more than technological breakthroughs.

“Strengthening regional food resilience requires more than breakthrough innovations – it requires a strong ecosystem that can translate promising ideas into solutions adopted at scale.”

Tay said Singapore is well positioned to support this process because of its strengths in innovation, financing and commercial translation.

“Through our support for Monsoon Ventures, EnterpriseSG hopes to help resilient food innovations move from the lab to the market, while reinforcing Singapore’s position as the region’s agrifood solutions hub.”

Rabo Foundation is also providing catalytic capital to support the venture studio and its objective of strengthening smallholder resilience.

Supporting Sustainable Growth

Bram Spann, Regional Lead Asia at Rabo Foundation, highlighted both the opportunities and challenges within Southeast Asia’s agtech ecosystem.

“Southeast Asia’s agtech landscape holds both enormous potential while experiencing persistent challenges. While promising start-ups continue to emerge, many still struggle to reach sustainability or scale.”

According to Spann, blended finance can help address these challenges by bringing together capital, knowledge and partnerships. The venture studio model can give founders the longer-term support required to test their ideas, validate business models and build sustainable companies.

“Through this venture studio model, founders can access the structured, long-term support they need to iterate, validate, and build resilient business models.”

The broader ambition is to create companies capable of delivering measurable benefits for farmers while building commercially sustainable businesse

A Regional Platform for Agtech Innovation

With its initial focus on six Southeast Asian markets, Monsoon Ventures is positioned to become a platform connecting agricultural innovators with capital, commercial expertise and strategic partners across the region.

The initiative comes at a time when Southeast Asian food systems face growing pressure from climate change, rising production costs and increasingly complex supply chains. For smallholder farmers, access to practical and affordable technologies could play an important role in improving productivity and resilience.

By helping promising solutions move from proof-of-concept to commercial adoption, Beanstalk AgTech believes Monsoon Ventures can contribute to closing a critical gap in the region’s innovation ecosystem.

The studio’s initial goal of supporting up to eight ventures over its first two years provides a foundation for a larger five-year ambition of building more than 30 scalable ventures. Through continued investment and partnerships with public, philanthropic and private-sector stakeholders, Monsoon Ventures aims to strengthen Southeast Asia’s agtech ecosystem and help ensure that innovations reach the farmers and food systems they are designed to serve.
