Cronus Chemicals LLC has reached a major milestone with the receipt of the Construction and Air Permit from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its new ammonia production plant in Tuscola, Illinois. This development marks a significant advancement for Project Cronus, strategically located in the US corn belt.
The state-of-the-art facility is set to revolutionize both US and global food supply chains. Leveraging cutting-edge UHDE – Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions technology, the plant will produce 950,000 short tons of ammonia annually. Its prime location, with access to three interstate gas pipelines, ensures a steady supply of natural gas, fostering competitive pricing and efficient operations.
“We are thrilled to announce that we have secured the EPA Construction and Air Permit,” said Erzin Atac, CEO of Cronus Chemicals. “This is a crucial step for the project and underscores our commitment to delivering reliable, locally-produced ammonia. Our plant, located in a key consumption region, will help alleviate local shortages and address supply concerns for farmers and industrial users alike.”
Melih Keyman, Chairman and majority shareholder of Cronus, added, “Launching a major project like Cronus Chemicals in the US is a tremendous opportunity for our family and Keytrade AG. We are proud to contribute to job creation in Illinois.”
With ammonia demand outstripping supply in the US, and Illinois being the top consumer, Project Cronus aims to fill this gap with its impressive production capacity. The new plant is poised to become a significant player in both national and global fertilizer markets.
Governor JB Pritzker emphasized, “Cronus Chemicals’ strategic location and advanced technology are supporting local farmers by producing a more sustainable fertilizer. This project not only strengthens the agricultural sector in Central Illinois but also drives innovation in sustainable fertilizer production, aligning with Illinois’ vision for a greener future.”
Josh McElravy, President of the Lincoln Land Building Trades Union, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are excited to see Cronus Chemicals achieve this milestone. Through the Project Labor Agreement with North America Building Trades Unions, we are committed to providing the skilled workforce needed to bring this important project to fruition.”
Cronus Chemicals’ initiative stands out for its economic and environmental benefits. The plant is expected to offer attractive returns by leveraging the high corn belt price premium. Unlike distant suppliers with long lead times, Cronus will provide safer, timely, and cost-effective deliveries. The EPA Air Permit highlights the project’s dedication to environmental sustainability, meeting rigorous standards and demonstrating a responsible approach to industrial development.
