
DoorDash Launches First Robotics Education Program Cohort in Mesa, Arizona
The city of Mesa, Arizona is now home to an innovative new educational initiative aimed at bringing real-world robotics and autonomous technology directly into the hands of middle school students. The newly launched DoorDash Robotics Academy, a pilot program developed by DoorDash, officially began its inaugural session this week at the STEM Academy at Red Mountain Ranch. Designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world technological applications, the program introduces students to the rapidly evolving fields of robotics and artificial intelligence through hands-on, experiential learning.
At the center of the program is Dot, DoorDash’s autonomous delivery robot, which serves as both a teaching tool and a real-world case study. By interacting with Dot and exploring its capabilities, students gain insight into how autonomous machines “think,” process information, and make decisions in dynamic, everyday environments. The first cohort includes 30 students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, offering a diverse group of learners the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology at an early stage in their education.
The development of the DoorDash Robotics Academy was not done in isolation. Earlier this year, in January, DoorDash hosted a collaborative listening session that brought together educators, students, school administrators, and community stakeholders. During this session, participants shared their perspectives on the future of robotics education and discussed how real-world autonomous technologies could be meaningfully integrated into K–12 learning environments. The insights gathered played a key role in shaping the curriculum and overall structure of the program, ensuring it is both relevant and accessible.
Sueli Shaw, Head of Social Impact at DoorDash, emphasized the broader vision behind the initiative. She explained that the goal is not only to teach technical skills but also to empower students to see themselves as active participants in shaping the future of technology. By connecting academic concepts to real-world applications—such as how goods are transported and delivered—students are encouraged to develop curiosity, confidence, and a sense of possibility when it comes to pursuing STEM-related careers.
School leadership has also expressed strong enthusiasm for the partnership. Principal Jaclyn Bycott highlighted the value of combining structured lessons with real-world examples, noting that the use of Dot provides a tangible and engaging way for students to understand complex concepts. She believes the program will serve as a catalyst for sparking long-term interest in robotics and technology among students, potentially influencing their academic and career paths.
A key strength of the DoorDash Robotics Academy lies in its flexible and educator-friendly design. Developed in collaboration with Sphero, a well-known K–12 robotics organization, the program is intentionally modular. This means it can be seamlessly integrated into existing classroom curricula or adapted for use in extracurricular settings such as robotics clubs. The low-friction approach ensures that teachers can incorporate the program without adding significant instructional burden, making it easier for schools to adopt and sustain.
The curriculum focuses on applied learning, allowing students to engage directly with robotics concepts through interactive challenges and activities. Using Sphero hardware, students tackle tasks that require logical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making—skills that are essential not only in STEM fields but across a wide range of disciplines. To ensure the program’s sustainability and long-term impact, participating schools are equipped with a comprehensive set of resources. The robotics club at the STEM Academy at Red Mountain Ranch has received a custom Sphero hardware kit, along with technical support and detailed educator guides. Additionally, DoorDash has provided grant funding to support the club’s operational needs. Importantly, all materials supplied during the pilot program will remain with the school after its completion, enabling continued use and expansion of robotics education initiatives.
