Today, we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Maryland Governor Wes Moore and the Restaurant Association of Maryland (RAM) to support Baltimore-area restaurants still facing challenges after the closure of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
When disasters strike, their effects can linger well beyond the initial impact, often leaving communities with long-term recovery needs. Inspired by the resilience shown across Baltimore in the aftermath of the bridge loss in March, we recognize that continued support is essential for local businesses navigating the ongoing challenges. A U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey from September 2024 revealed that about a third (34%) of small businesses impacted by disasters require six months or more to recover, with some taking over a year.
To assist Governor Moore and RAM’s efforts, DoorDash is expanding its Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund by offering $100,000 in grants to Baltimore-area restaurants still affected by the bridge loss. Eligible restaurants can use these funds for essential expenses like rent, mortgage payments, payroll, and other operating costs. Applications are due by December 2, 2024.
“The loss of the Key Bridge has affected the Baltimore community — impacting businesses, workers, and the diners they serve. Relief programs like these offer vital support to restaurants and their employees, helping them remain open and continue to serve their communities,” said Governor Wes Moore. “I am thankful to DoorDash and the Restaurant Association of Maryland for this crucial partnership, which will directly help restaurants stay afloat, retain employees, and sustain economic activity across Baltimore.”
“Local businesses are the heart of Baltimore, and it’s essential they can rebuild stronger than ever,” said Tony Xu, CEO and co-founder of DoorDash. “After a disaster, communities need the connection and hospitality that local restaurants provide. DoorDash is honored to work alongside Governor Moore and the Restaurant Association of Maryland in our shared mission to support these cherished establishments in their recovery.”
“Hospitality means lending a hand when it’s needed most, and we know many in our industry are still struggling without this crucial piece of Baltimore’s infrastructure,” added Marshall Weston, CEO of RAM. “We’re excited to partner with DoorDash and Governor Moore to ensure RAM members and the Baltimore community have the resources they need to rebuild.”
To qualify for the Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund, restaurants must demonstrate that they’ve been affected by the Key Bridge closure, operate between one and three locations, employ fewer than 50 people per location, have been open for at least six months, and have revenue of $3 million or less per location over the past year. In response to customer interest in supporting their favorite local businesses, DoorDash is also offering $100,000 in discounts on orders from the Baltimore restaurants most impacted by the bridge loss. From November 1 through November 21, customers in the area will find discounts on eligible orders in the DoorDash app, helping boost revenue for these businesses as they continue their recovery journey.
