National Beverage Corp. Reports First-Quarter Earnings Results

National Beverage Corp. (NASDAQ: FIZZ), a leading producer of flavored sparkling water, carbonated soft drinks and other beverage products, has reported its financial results for the first quarter ended August 1, 2026. The company said its performance during the quarter was affected by softer consumer sentiment, tariffs and higher commodity and transportation costs, although management remains encouraged by improving order trends entering August.

For the three-month period, National Beverage reported net sales of $331 million. The company recorded a gross margin of 35%, reflecting significant pressure from increased packaging and ingredient costs. Earnings per share came in at $0.50.

Despite the challenging operating environment, National Beverage continued to maintain a strong cash position. Cash totaled $107 million following the company’s payment of a $304 million special dividend, equal to $3.25 per share, on July 30, 2026.

Consumer Sentiment and Tariffs Affect Sales Performance

Management said first-quarter sales were negatively affected by weaker consumer sentiment and the impact of tariffs. Although the company implemented increases in average selling prices, those gains were largely offset by declines in sales volume.

According to the company, market conditions remained soft during the first quarter. However, management pointed to an encouraging improvement in customer orders during August and expressed optimism that stronger volume and product mix could help return the business to growth.

The company continues to monitor consumer purchasing behavior as inflationary pressures and broader economic uncertainty influence spending patterns. Beverage companies across the industry have faced challenges balancing higher production costs with consumers’ sensitivity to pricing.

National Beverage said its recent pricing actions are expected to contribute to improved financial performance as they work through the business. At the same time, management emphasized that disciplined operating execution will remain important as market conditions continue to evolve.

Aluminum Costs Create Significant Margin Pressure

One of the most significant challenges during the quarter came from higher aluminum prices and tariff-related expenses. National Beverage said elevated aluminum commodity costs had a particularly substantial impact on profitability.

The company estimated that aluminum costs alone reduced its gross margin by nearly 600 basis points during the quarter. Higher packaging and ingredient costs added further pressure to the company’s cost structure.

Fuel and freight expenses also increased during the period, affecting both inbound transportation of materials and outbound shipments of finished products. The combination of commodity inflation, tariffs, freight expenses and other external cost pressures created a difficult environment for maintaining historical margin levels.

Management acknowledged that the company was disappointed by the decline in margins but said the speed and convergence of the external pressures made it more difficult to respond as quickly as it has in previous periods.

National Beverage also said it had chosen to absorb a portion of tariff-related cost increases in response to a request from the current U.S. administration. The company continues to closely monitor volatile commodity and trade conditions while evaluating additional actions to protect its financial performance.

Pricing Actions Expected to Support Future Performance

Despite the difficult first quarter, National Beverage remains focused on improving profitability through a combination of pricing initiatives and cost discipline.

The company recently introduced pricing actions intended to offset a portion of the increased costs affecting its business. Management believes these actions, together with tighter operational management, can help strengthen results in future quarters.

The company will also continue monitoring commodity markets, transportation expenses and tariff developments. These factors remain important considerations for beverage manufacturers because packaging materials, ingredients, logistics and distribution represent significant components of overall production costs.

Management’s comments suggest that restoring volume growth while maintaining pricing discipline will be a key priority during the remainder of the fiscal year.

LaCroix Innovation Remains a Key Growth Driver

Innovation continues to play an important role in National Beverage’s strategy for generating consumer interest and creating new consumption occasions.

Among the company’s latest innovations is a new flavor for its LaCroix Sparkling Water portfolio: PineApple CocoNut. The beverage combines pineapple flavor with a coconut finish and was highlighted through the company’s summer advertising campaign.

National Beverage described the new flavor as a combination designed to deliver a bright pineapple taste alongside a smooth coconut profile. The company said the product quickly gained favor with consumers following its introduction.

The launch reflects National Beverage’s broader focus on developing distinctive flavors that can generate incremental demand while strengthening consumer engagement with its brands.

For LaCroix, continued flavor innovation is particularly important as consumers seek variety within the sparkling-water category. New flavor combinations can help established brands maintain relevance, encourage trial and provide retailers with additional products to feature in beverage aisles and displays.

Balanced Beverage Portfolio Supports Growth Strategy

National Beverage continues to position its portfolio around several beverage categories, including LaCroix Sparkling Water, carbonated soft drinks, juices and other flavored beverages.

The company highlighted LaCroix’s healthier positioning as an important part of its portfolio. At the same time, its carbonated soft drinks are designed to provide consumers with accessible, value-oriented flavor options.

Its single-serve juice and drink products provide additional opportunities across different retail and food-service channels. Management believes this diversified portfolio gives the company flexibility to participate in multiple beverage categories and reach consumers with different preferences.

The company’s strategy combines product innovation with consumer marketing, merchandising and targeted promotional programs. National Beverage said these initiatives are supported by disciplined operational execution designed to maximize the performance of its brands.

Strong Cash Generation Supports Shareholder Returns

National Beverage’s latest special dividend also highlights the company’s focus on returning capital to shareholders.

The $3.25-per-share special dividend paid on July 30 marked the company’s 13th special cash dividend. According to management, the company’s special dividends have collectively distributed $19.78 per share, representing more than $1.8 billion returned to shareholders.

The company views its cash-generation capabilities and balance sheet strength as important components of its long-term financial strategy.

Despite the current pressures on margins, National Beverage said its financial position provides a strong foundation for navigating challenging market conditions while continuing to invest in its brands and products.
