This summer, travelers passing through airports will have the chance to discover Nestlé’s new travel retail-exclusive Sustainably Sourced chocolate range. This brand highlights Nestlé’s rich heritage in chocolate making and its dedication to responsible sourcing through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance.
As more consumers seek products made with responsibly sourced ingredients, such as cocoa, with transparent claims and measurable progress on critical producer issues, sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the travel retail sector. Currently, 71% of travelers report that sustainability influences their purchasing decisions.
Nestlé Sustainably Sourced chocolate uses Rainforest Alliance-certified cocoa, sourced through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. This program, established fifteen years ago, has engaged over 170,000 families and is built on three pillars:
- Better farming, aiming to improve livelihoods in communities;
- Better lives, aiming to enhance social conditions for families;
- Better cocoa, aiming to improve product sustainability.
This new travel retail confectionery brand will be available in airports worldwide. Travelers can personalize their 170g and 280g bars by adding custom messages to the product sleeves. Campaign visuals will also encourage customers to learn more about the Nestlé Cocoa Plan and the Rainforest Alliance partnership.
“Through creative branding, we can provide transparency on the origin of the cocoa used in our chocolate,” said Aura Sanchez, Head of Marketing at Nestlé Travel Retail. “It enables us to raise awareness about our longstanding commitments to supporting cocoa-farming families and the long-term sustainability of cocoa production.”
Recently, Nestlé launched the first KitKat made with fully traceable cocoa ingredients from the farming families it supports. In line with other Nestlé confectionery brands, such as Smarties, which have transitioned to paper packaging, Nestlé Sustainably Sourced Cocoa will also be available in a recyclable paper pouch.
As part of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, over 1.2 million forest and fruit trees have been distributed to cocoa farmers. These trees help mitigate the effects of the sun and provide moisture-rich environments for crops during the dry season. Additionally, nearly 20,000 hectares have been pruned as part of the income accelerator program to enhance crop productivity and reduce pests and diseases on cocoa farms.
