Rainy Days Café Enters a New Chapter as Cowan’s Cafe with New Name and Full Ownership After Nearly 50 Years
A familiar Grand Haven restaurant is entering a new chapter, bringing together a new name, longtime customers, familiar faces and a family connection that stretches back nearly 50 years.
After more than three years of operating Rainy Days Café, Sarah and Tom Cowan have officially completed the purchase of both the restaurant and the property. With the ownership transition now complete, the longtime Grand Haven establishment will soon officially become Cowan’s Cafe.
Although the name above the door is changing, the Cowans say the personality and community spirit that have defined the restaurant will remain firmly in place.
“Rainy Days has become so much more than a business to us,” said Sarah Cowan. “It’s where we see our friends, hear people’s stories, watch families come through the door and get to know our customers by name. We want people to know that the things they love about this place aren’t going anywhere.”
For the Cowans, the transition represents more than a business milestone. It is also the continuation of a family story that began decades ago.
A Grand Haven Restaurant With Deep Roots
The restaurant building has been part of the Grand Haven community for generations and has operated under several names throughout its history. Before becoming Rainy Days Café, the location was known as The Shamrock.
That earlier chapter holds particular significance for Tom Cowan and his family.
Tom’s family operated the restaurant in 1976, creating a remarkable connection between the restaurant’s past and its future. Nearly five decades later, Tom and Sarah are taking ownership of the same establishment and placing their family name on the door.

Sarah and Tom began operating Rainy Days Café on May 1, 2023. Sarah brought more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant and hospitality industries, while Tom brought a personal connection to the property and a shared commitment to maintaining the character of a neighborhood restaurant.
Since taking over operations, the couple has continued serving the breakfast and lunch favorites that customers have come to expect while developing their own relationships with guests.
For the Cowans, those relationships have become one of the most rewarding parts of running the restaurant.
On September 4, 2026, the couple officially completed the purchase of the business and property, marking an important milestone in their journey.
A Personal Full-Circle Moment

Customers can continue to expect many of the Rainy Days Café favorites they already know and enjoy. The menu will also receive a few new additions as the Cowans introduce their own ideas and explore flavors connected to Grand Haven’s restaurant history.
Among those returning flavors will be a local favorite that longtime residents may remember: the famous Sheepherder.
For Sarah and Tom, bringing back familiar dishes is a way to connect the restaurant’s future with its past.
“Food has a way of bringing back memories,” Sarah Cowan said. “There are certain dishes and flavors people remember because they grew up with them, shared them with family or enjoyed them at places that were part of Grand Haven for years.”
Tom said the couple hopes to preserve some of that nostalgia while also establishing new traditions for future generations of customers.
“We love the idea of keeping a little bit of that nostalgia alive while creating some traditions of our own,” he said.
That balance will define the transition to Cowan’s Cafe: respecting the restaurant’s history while allowing the business to continue evolving.
