Following an extensive three-year transformation, Robert Mondavi Winery has officially reopened its landmark estate, ushering in a new era for one of Napa Valley’s most influential wine producers. Timed to coincide with the winery’s 60th anniversary, the revitalized property blends heritage and innovation, unveiling a fully modernized destination that redefines the visitor experience while honoring its pioneering roots. This reopening marks the most significant evolution of the estate since its founding in 1966 and is commemorated with the release of a limited-edition 60th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

At the heart of this transformation lies a careful balance between preservation and forward-thinking design. The winery’s iconic architectural elements—originally conceived by renowned midcentury architect Clifford May—have been meticulously restored, including the signature arch and tower that have long defined the estate’s visual identity. Complementing these historic features are contemporary architectural and landscape enhancements led by Aidlin Darling Design and Surfacedesign, which deepen the connection between the winery, its vineyards, and the surrounding Napa Valley terrain.

The reimagined estate introduces an array of new and expanded visitor offerings designed to elevate hospitality and engagement. A newly constructed hospitality wing anchors the experience, featuring indoor-outdoor tasting environments that provide panoramic vineyard views. Guests can now explore a diverse portfolio of curated experiences available by reservation, including immersive tastings, guided cellar tours, and educational walking tours that offer insight into both the winery’s history and its modern transformation.

Central to this next chapter is an enhanced approach to winemaking, driven by both technological advancement and a deepened commitment to sustainability. The estate’s famed To Kalon Vineyard—widely regarded as one of the most prestigious vineyards in Napa Valley—now holds organic certification from California Certified Organic Farmers. This milestone underscores the winery’s dedication to environmentally responsible practices and contributes to the production of wines characterized by exceptional purity, balance, and site expression.

A major highlight of the transformation is the introduction of the new To Kalon Cellar, a state-of-the-art winemaking facility designed to enable greater precision and flexibility. Equipped with advanced features such as optical grape sorting, gravity-flow systems, and temperature-controlled fermentation and barrel-aging environments, the cellar allows winemakers to vinify smaller, more distinct lots. This refined approach enhances the ability to capture the unique characteristics of individual vineyard blocks, resulting in wines that express both immediacy and long-term aging potential.

Architecturally, the redesign opens the estate outward, inviting guests to engage more directly with the landscape. A striking inverted gable canopy—echoing the winery’s historic arch—serves as a focal point, connecting a series of terraces, tasting areas, and gathering spaces. Adjacent to this is a newly built culinary center featuring an indoor-outdoor veranda, supporting an expanded food and wine program that draws inspiration from the estate’s gardens and regional ingredients.

A thoughtfully designed linear water feature runs through the south wing, inspired by traditional agricultural aqueducts. This element not only enhances the visual experience but also symbolizes the winery’s longstanding commitment to sustainable water management—an essential consideration in Napa Valley’s agricultural ecosystem.

The landscape design, developed by Surfacedesign, reflects a deep understanding of the region’s geological and ecological history. Plantings, pathways, and terraces are carefully curated to mirror the natural forces—such as volcanic activity and sedimentary processes—that have shaped the unique terroir of the To Kalon Vineyard. This approach creates a seamless integration between the built environment and the natural landscape, offering visitors a richer, more immersive experience.

Interior spaces, crafted by San Francisco-based design firm BAMO, provide an intimate counterbalance to the estate’s expansive outdoor areas. Drawing inspiration from the textures and tones of the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains, the interiors feature a series of thoughtfully curated environments that encourage reflection and connection. Historic elements, including hand-painted tiles by Margrit Mondavi, have been preserved and integrated alongside contemporary design features, reinforcing a sense of continuity between past and present.

The transformation also extends to the winery’s north wing, which now houses production facilities, private tasting areas, and immersive guest experiences. Among the highlights is the To Kalon Collective, a unique tasting concept that brings together wines from multiple producers connected to the To Kalon Vineyard, including Robert Mondavi Winery, To Kalon Vineyard Company, Schrader Cellars, and Double Diamond. This offering provides guests with a comprehensive exploration of the vineyard’s diverse expressions.

Another standout feature is the reimagined bell tower, now known as the Tower Library. This intimate tasting space offers a curated journey through the winery’s history and portfolio, providing a distinctive perspective on its evolution over six decades.

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the winery is releasing a 2023 Commemorative Edition Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, priced at $125. Sourced from select blocks within To Kalon and Wappo Hill Vineyards, this limited-edition wine exemplifies the estate’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship. It will be available beginning April 20 through the winery’s website, at the estate, and via select U.S. retail and wholesale partners.

With reservations now open, visitors are invited to explore a range of newly introduced experiences. Options include the Pioneer Tasting, which highlights Napa Valley and Estates wines; the Visionary Tasting, focused on terroir-driven expressions; and the Legend Tasting and Tour, showcasing the winery’s most prestigious Reserve selections.
