WISEcode Unveils WISEscore: First Food Rating Combining Ingredients and Nutrient Quality
FoodTechAI™ innovator WISEcode, on a mission to deliver precision transparency in the food system, today unveiled WISEscore™, the first comprehensive food score to merge ingredient quality and nutrient quality into a single, easy-to-understand metric. Now available in the free WISEcode app, WISEscore offers a unified rating that allows consumers to quickly assess both the ingredients and the nutritional value of the foods they eat.
The WISEcode platform draws on a massive dataset of over 730,000 foods and 10 billion data points, representing a significant leap forward from traditional Nutrition Facts Panels, which cover only 15 nutrients. With WISEscore, WISEcode is redefining food transparency by transforming complex scientific data into clear, actionable insights.
At the heart of WISEscore are WISEcode’s proprietary Codes™, compact, science-based measures that decode critical aspects of food, from processing levels and seed oils to fiber quality and omega balance. Together, WISEscore and Codes provide consumers with the first truly transparent view of what is in their food, while laying the groundwork for businesses, policymakers, and AI systems to standardize food intelligence at scale.
How WISEscore Works
WISEscore combines two foundational measures to produce a single, unified number. The Ingredient Quality Score evaluates processing levels, restricted or banned additives, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, sweeteners, seed oils, and emulsifiers. The Nutrient Quality Score assesses protein density, fiber density, sugar density, carbohydrate quality, and fat quality, with planned expansions to include micronutrients and polyphenols. Weighted equally, these two measures generate a WISEscore displayed on a meter ranging from Excellent to Poor, providing consumers with an immediate and reliable assessment of both ingredient integrity and nutritional value.
The launch of WISEscore comes at a time of growing consumer demand for transparency. According to the CDC, ultra-processed foods still account for more than half of daily caloric intake in the U.S., though this trend is slowly declining. Meanwhile, roughly three out of four Americans say they would prefer to use food rather than pharmaceuticals to manage their health. WISEscore addresses this need by offering a simple, trustworthy tool to guide healthier food choices.
“WISEscore takes the complexity of food and makes it understandable at a glance,” said Peter Castleman, Founder and CEO of WISEcode. “Consumers no longer have to guess whether a product is healthy or rely on inconsistent labels. Every score is grounded in one of the most detailed food databases in the world, delivering clarity people can trust. At the same time, we are creating a foundation for a food system that is more transparent, accountable, and data-driven. We invite the community—consumers, scientists, and innovators—to join this revolution and help shape the future of food transparency.”
A Technological Leap in Food Intelligence
For decades, food decisions—from apps to government guidelines—have relied on incomplete and outdated information. WISEcode changes that by capturing detailed data on ingredients, processing levels, nutrient densities, additives, and lab-validated information across more than 15,000 attributes. This approach creates a food intelligence system that reflects real-world conditions rather than approximations, ensuring that every WISEscore is scientifically robust and trustworthy for consumers, researchers, and policymakers alike.
The platform also supports personalization. Recognizing that food is not one-size-fits-all, WISEcode enables users to tailor insights based on health goals, DNA, and dietary needs. Through WISEcode’s Codes, individuals can optimize protein intake, manage sugar consumption, support gut health, or avoid ultra-processed foods, translating massive datasets into actionable, personalized guidance.
By embedding this database into AI-ready Codes and the WISEscore, WISEcode transforms food transparency from a confusing label on a package into meaningful guidance that empowers prevention, longevity, and everyday confidence.
“WISEcode represents the intersection of massive data and AI functionality,” said Richard Black, Chief Scientific Officer. “We are advancing nutrition science to meet today’s public health challenges. This is food transparency that delivers outcomes that truly matter.”
With WISEscore, WISEcode is not just offering a new metric—it is redefining how consumers, businesses, and policymakers interact with food, creating a future where clarity, trust, and actionable insights guide every decision at the grocery aisle and beyond.
