World Food Academy for Sustainable Food Systems Launched to Advance Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building

Nestlé and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health have formed a strategic partnership to launch the World Food Academy for Sustainable Food Systems, an ambitious global initiative designed to strengthen education, innovation, and collaboration across the food sector. Conceived as a multi-stakeholder ecosystem, the Academy aims to empower the next generation of leaders in food and nutrition by offering accessible, high-quality learning opportunities and fostering meaningful exchanges between academia, industry, and policy communities.

At its core, the World Food Academy seeks to address some of the most pressing challenges facing global food systems today, including food insecurity, malnutrition, climate change, and unsustainable agricultural practices. By targeting university students, early-career researchers, and young professionals—particularly those from priority regions in the Global South—the initiative is focused on building capacity where it is most urgently needed. Through a combination of academic training, applied research, and real-world exposure, participants will gain the interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills required to drive systemic change.

Professor Kaveh Madani, Director of UNU-INWEH, emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, describing it as a platform that bridges the gap between research and real-world implementation. He highlighted the importance of equipping emerging leaders with scientific, technical, and policy expertise, enabling them to develop actionable solutions to complex food system challenges. According to him, the collaboration with Nestlé enhances the Institute’s ability to connect scientific insights with policy frameworks, ensuring that knowledge is not only generated but effectively applied to create sustainable and resilient food systems.

A key component of the Academy will be the integration of Nestlé’s Science & Technology Seminars, which are part of the company’s broader Nestlé needs YOUth initiative. First introduced in 2023, these seminars have already demonstrated significant global reach and impact. Delivered free of charge and led by subject matter experts, the sessions cover a wide range of topics including agricultural science, food technology, and nutrition. They also provide valuable insights into cost-effective and sustainable methods of food production. In the past year alone, the seminars reached approximately 7,000 students across more than 300 academic institutions in over 90 countries, underscoring the strong demand for accessible, high-quality educational resources in this field.

Through this partnership, UNU-INWEH will contribute its extensive expertise in research, capacity development, and policy engagement to enhance the scope and effectiveness of these seminars. The Institute’s involvement will ensure that participants benefit from up-to-date knowledge, evidence-based practices, and practical tools that can be directly applied in their professional journeys. In addition, UNU-INWEH will share its specialized knowledge in areas such as sustainable agriculture and responsible land management—critical components for ensuring long-term food security, protecting biodiversity, and building resilience to climate change.

The initiative also aligns closely with UNU-INWEH’s ongoing efforts in digital education and knowledge dissemination. Programs such as the Online Learning Centre, the Media Academy, and the UN Water Conference Academic Hub will complement the Academy’s offerings, leveraging over three decades of institutional experience. Importantly, all activities under the World Food Academy will be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on quality education, reduced inequalities, and sustainable consumption and production.

One of the defining features of the World Food Academy is its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. All educational resources developed through the partnership will be made freely available to learners worldwide, with a special emphasis on supporting individuals in low-income and underserved regions. By removing financial barriers, the initiative aims to democratize access to knowledge and create a more equitable global learning environment.

Professor Stefan Palzer, Chief Technology Officer at Nestlé, underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing global food challenges. He noted that ensuring food security and transitioning to sustainable food systems requires coordinated efforts across the entire food value chain. Through this partnership, Nestlé will share its extensive scientific expertise and practical experience in food production and nutrition, helping to equip young professionals with the tools needed to transform both local and global food systems. The ultimate goal, he explained, is to make food more nutritious, affordable, and environmentally sustainable.

Looking ahead, both partners plan to expand the scope of the Academy by building a global network of universities, research institutions, and industry stakeholders. This expansion will include the development of new career pathways and professional development opportunities such as internships, fellowships, sabbaticals, and specialized training programs. By fostering a vibrant and interconnected community, the Academy aims to accelerate innovation and drive collective action in the food sector.

As part of its initial activities, Nestlé and UNU-INWEH will co-host a symposium on Sustainable Food Systems later this year. This event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, private sector leaders, and representatives from civil society. The symposium will serve as a platform for dialogue and collaboration, focusing on practical strategies to improve access to nutritious and affordable food while promoting environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
