China leg of the Australia–China Winemaker Immersion Program kicks off
Four Australian winemakers embark on a month-long exchange to deepen collaboration and innovation across the two nations’ wine industries.
Four Australian winemakers have departed for China as part of the Australia–China Winemaker Immersion Program, marking the next chapter in a pioneering exchange designed to strengthen ties between the Australian and Chinese wine sectors.
Launched at Penfolds Magill Estate in South Australia, the program provides participants with hands-on experience across China’s leading wine regions, including Beijing, Ningxia, and Shanghai. Over the next month, they will engage with winemakers, academics and industry leaders to explore viticulture, sustainability, and innovation in wine production.
TWE’s Chief Supply & Sustainability Officer Kerrin Petty said the initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration.
“There’s no better way to understand another market than through a hands-on immersion program. We’re proud to lead this on behalf of Australia’s wine industry and look forward to nurturing the next generation of international winemaking talent.”
Australia China Winemaker Immersion participants and Industry partners
The program follows the successful South Australian leg earlier this year, which saw four Chinese winemakers experience Australia’s vintage season, working alongside TWE’s production teams in the Barossa Valley, Magill, and McLaren Vale.
Delivered by Treasury Wine Estates in partnership with Australian Grape & Wine (AGW) and the China Alcoholic Drinks Association (CADA), the initiative is supported by government, academic and industry partners in both countries.
Australian Grape & Wine Chief Executive Officer Lee McLean said the exchange underscores the importance of international cooperation and technical learning.
“This program is leading the way for cross-cultural collaboration and knowledge-sharing between two of the world’s most dynamic wine industries. By bringing together talented winemakers from Australia and China, we’re helping to build enduring professional relationships and a deeper mutual understanding of viticulture and winemaking practices.
