A Career Dedicated to Viticulture Innovation

Dr. Dokoozlian’s career spans decades of influential work in viticulture, with a focus on improving the productivity, quality, and resilience of grape production systems. He began his professional journey as a researcher in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, where he spent 15 years contributing to foundational research in grape science.

In 2004, he transitioned to E. & J. Gallo Winery (commonly known as Gallo), one of the world’s leading wine producers. At Gallo, Dr. Dokoozlian has continued to advance viticulture research while expanding the scope of collaboration between academia, government agencies, and the private sector. He currently serves as Vice President of Grape, Wine, and Beverage Research, where he leads initiatives aimed at improving vineyard sustainability and efficiency.

Key Contributions and Achievements

Among Dr. Dokoozlian’s many accomplishments is his instrumental role in the formation of the National Grape Research Alliance (NGRA) in 2003. The NGRA serves as a collaborative platform that connects industry stakeholders, academic researchers, and federal and state agencies to address critical challenges in viticulture. Since 2008, Dr. Dokoozlian has served as the organization’s Research Chair, guiding its strategic direction and helping to initiate research programs focused on issues such as disease management, sustainability, and crop productivity.

Another significant contribution has been his advocacy for permanent federal funding to support key research institutions within the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS). His efforts have helped secure funding for the Grape Genetics Research Unit in Geneva, New York, and the Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems Research Unit in Davis, California. These centers play a vital role in conducting foundational research to address pressing agricultural challenges, including drought resilience and disease resistance.

Dr. Dokoozlian also led the development of the GRAPEX (Grape Remote Sensing Atmospheric Profile and Evapotranspiration eXperiment) project, a groundbreaking, decade-long collaboration involving Gallo, USDA-ARS, Utah State University, NASA, and other partners. GRAPEX leveraged advanced remote sensing technologies to improve water use efficiency in vineyards. The project achieved significant reductions in water consumption while maintaining crop quality and yield, demonstrating the potential of precision agriculture tools to address resource scarcity.

Importantly, the success of GRAPEX has extended beyond viticulture. The methodologies and technologies developed through the project have been adapted for use in other crops, including almonds and olives, further amplifying its impact across the agricultural sector.
