Asian Farmers to Benefit from New Syngenta–Ascribe Biofungicide Partnership

Syngenta, one of the world’s leading agricultural technology companies, has entered into a landmark development and supply agreement with Ascribe Bioscience to commercialize PHYTALIX®, an innovative biofungicide designed to strengthen crop defenses against a broad range of diseases. The partnership marks a significant step forward in the development and adoption of biological crop protection solutions, particularly for rice farmers across Southeast Asia who are facing mounting challenges from climate change, disease pressure, and evolving pathogen resistance.

Under the agreement, Syngenta will receive exclusive commercial rights to market and distribute PHYTALIX® for rice and several other major crops throughout Southeast Asia. The companies also see potential opportunities to expand the product’s reach into additional markets in the future, reflecting growing global demand for sustainable and effective crop protection technologies.

The collaboration follows four years of extensive evaluation and field validation conducted by Syngenta. During this period, PHYTALIX® consistently demonstrated strong performance across a variety of agricultural environments and disease management programs. Trial results showed the product’s ability to significantly enhance crop resistance against fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens while contributing to stable and meaningful yield improvements, particularly in rice production systems.

One of the most notable outcomes from the field evaluations was the product’s effectiveness against Bacterial Leaf Blight, one of the most damaging rice diseases in Asia. The disease can severely reduce crop productivity, causing substantial economic losses for farmers. By strengthening plants’ natural defense mechanisms, PHYTALIX® has shown considerable promise as a valuable addition to integrated pest management (IPM) programs aimed at reducing disease pressure while maintaining high productivity.

PHYTALIX® is based on scientific discoveries originally made at the Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University. Unlike traditional crop protection products that directly target pathogens, the technology works by mimicking natural plant signaling processes. This approach activates and enhances a plant’s own immune system, enabling crops to better defend themselves against a wide spectrum of disease-causing organisms throughout the growing season.

The technology has demonstrated potential across multiple major agricultural crops, including rice, soybeans, corn, and wheat. By empowering plants to activate their natural defense responses, PHYTALIX® offers a novel mode of action that complements both conventional crop protection products and other biological solutions. This characteristic is particularly important as farmers and agricultural industries seek new approaches to managing disease resistance and reducing dependence on a limited number of chemical control methods.

The partnership comes at a critical time for global rice production. Rice remains the primary food source for nearly half of the world’s population and plays a vital role in food security across Asia.
