Southeastern Grocers Inc. (SEG), the parent company of Harveys Supermarket and Winn-Dixie grocery stores, is reinforcing its dedication to pollinator health during National Pollinator Month. Highlighting L&M as their Fresh Supplier of the Year, SEG commends L&M for their proactive measures in protecting pollinators, essential for agriculture and food production.
Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and birds play a crucial role in our food supply, contributing to one-third of the food we consume, according to USDA estimates. To support these vital species, SEG has implemented a robust pollinator policy. This includes avoiding harmful pesticides, sourcing produce from suppliers with integrated pest management practices, and promoting USDA Organic products in their stores. They also collaborate with suppliers and community groups to advance pollinator-friendly initiatives.
Dewayne Rabon, Chief Merchandising Officer at Southeastern Grocers, emphasized their commitment, stating, “Our responsibility as a community-focused grocer extends beyond store shelves. Protecting pollinators is integral to securing our food systems and supporting environmental health.” Partnering with suppliers like L&M allows SEG to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship effectively.
L&M, recognized for their sustainability efforts and dedication to pollinator conservation, has ceased using organophosphate pesticides and established bee sanctuaries on their ranches. They are working with the USDA to develop new pollinator habitats, scheduled to launch this fall, aligning with SEG’s sustainability goals.
In support of these efforts, SEG recently donated $10,000 to the University of North Florida Ogier Gardens and engaged in various community initiatives. These include establishing pollinator gardens and supporting educational projects at local institutions like Tree Hill Nature Center in Jacksonville and Schoolyard Roots in Alabama.
SEG remains committed to advocating for pollinator health beyond National Pollinator Month. Through partnerships, sustainable practices, and community engagement, SEG aims to ensure a resilient food supply and a sustainable future for all.
