Farms and Fuels Alliance Launches to Boost Canada’s Ethanol Sector
Greenfield Global Inc. and Alco Energy Canada (formerly IGPC Ethanol Inc.), two of Canada’s largest fuel ethanol producers, along with Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province’s largest commodity organization, have announced the formation of Canada’s Farms and Fuels Alliance (FFA). This new coalition aims to bring together Canada’s domestic ethanol industry and agricultural sector to advocate for policies that promote biofuel production, ensure fair market opportunities, and foster sustainable economic growth in rural communities.
The Canadian ethanol industry has spent decades establishing itself as a world-class sector that delivers significant economic and environmental benefits. However, as the industry faces increasing global competition and evolving regulatory landscapes, stakeholders must remain proactive in safeguarding past achievements and positioning themselves for future growth. According to Andrea Kent, Vice President of Industry and Government Affairs at Greenfield Global, “Now is the time to safeguard our past achievements and position ourselves for the next chapter – one that ensures policies reflect the full economic potential of homegrown biofuels and stand-up in a competitive global landscape.”
Kevin Norton, CEO of Alco Energy Canada, also emphasized the importance of strengthening the ethanol sector through policy advocacy. He stated, “Canada’s ethanol industry is at a critical juncture, and we must ensure that policies reflect the realities and needs of our domestic producers and agricultural partners. The Farms and Fuels Alliance will provide a unified voice to advocate for solutions that strengthen our competitiveness, drive investment, and create long-term economic benefits for rural communities.”
The Farms and Fuels Alliance has identified three core objectives as part of its mission:
- Strengthening Canadian Policy – The alliance seeks to modernize renewable fuels policies, update programs, and refine carbon accounting frameworks to fully recognize the innovations brought forth by Canadian producers. This includes addressing regulatory loopholes that could be exploited by non-domestic feedstock and biofuel producers, ensuring a level playing field for homegrown ethanol.
- Championing Fair Practices – FFA will advocate for balanced and equitable policies that unleash the full potential of Canada’s ethanol sector. The alliance aims to create a regulatory environment that supports domestic agricultural producers and maintains the integrity of the Canadian ethanol industry.
- Driving Rural Revitalization – By uniting ethanol producers, farmers, and policymakers, FFA intends to strengthen agricultural communities across Canada. This initiative will deliver economic benefits to rural areas, ensuring long-term sustainability and prosperity.
Grain farming is a critical component of Canada’s agricultural economy and plays a vital role in maintaining the security of the nation’s food system. Policies that support Canadian farmers and ethanol producers are essential for sustaining the competitiveness of domestic value chains. Jeff Harrison, Chair of Grain Farmers of Ontario, underscored the significance of this alliance, stating, “Grain farming is at the heart of agriculture, the security of Canada’s food system, and economic sustainability. Canada’s farmers and ethanol producers need policies that help them remain competitive and promote strength in our domestic value chains. We look forward to working with Greenfield Global and Alco Energy Canada through the FFA to ensure that farmers’ voices are heard in policy discussions.”

The Need for a Unified Approach
The formation of the FFA comes at a time when global energy markets are shifting, and environmental concerns are shaping policy decisions more than ever before. As countries around the world work toward reducing carbon emissions and embracing cleaner energy alternatives, the role of biofuels has never been more critical. Ethanol, produced from renewable resources such as corn and other grains, offers a cleaner-burning alternative to fossil fuels, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to climate change mitigation.
Canada’s ethanol industry has already made significant progress in advancing technology, improving efficiencies, and reducing carbon footprints. However, without the right policies in place, the industry risks being outpaced by international competitors. The FFA will work to ensure that the federal and provincial governments recognize the economic and environmental benefits of domestic biofuel production and implement policies that encourage growth rather than stifle it.
The Economic Impact of Ethanol Production
Ethanol production is not only an environmental solution but also a key economic driver for Canada’s rural communities. The industry provides thousands of jobs across the country, from farmers supplying feedstock to workers operating ethanol production facilities. Additionally, it creates market stability for grain farmers by offering a reliable demand for their crops.
Investments in ethanol production infrastructure have revitalized many rural areas, fostering job creation, increased tax revenue, and economic diversification. However, the potential for even greater economic impact exists if the industry is provided with the necessary support to expand and innovate. By advocating for modernized policies, fair market practices, and investment incentives, the FFA aims to unlock the full potential of Canada’s ethanol sector.
A Call for Policy Reform
One of the central issues facing the ethanol industry is the regulatory framework governing renewable fuels. Existing policies often fail to acknowledge the unique contributions of Canadian biofuels, leading to market imbalances that favor imported alternatives. The FFA will work closely with policymakers to develop regulations that reflect the realities of the domestic industry and ensure that Canadian ethanol producers are not disadvantaged.
Modernizing carbon accounting methodologies is another critical priority. Currently, outdated assessment models may not fully capture the lower carbon intensity of Canadian ethanol compared to some imported alternatives. Updating these methodologies will allow Canadian producers to receive fair recognition for their contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Additionally, trade policies play a significant role in the competitiveness of Canada’s ethanol sector. The alliance will push for trade agreements that protect domestic producers and prevent unfair competition from foreign ethanol suppliers who may operate under different regulatory standards.
The Future of Canada’s Biofuel Industry
Looking ahead, the Farms and Fuels Alliance aims to be a powerful advocate for the ethanol industry and agricultural sector in Canada. By bringing together key stakeholders, the coalition will amplify the voices of ethanol producers and farmers, ensuring that their interests are represented in policy discussions at all levels of government.
As Canada continues to transition toward a low-carbon economy, biofuels will play an increasingly important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy security. The work of the FFA will be instrumental in shaping the future of the biofuel industry, ensuring that policies support innovation, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
