Agri-Entrepreneurship Advances in Ukraine Through AGCO Foundation and Helvetas Partnership
The AGCO Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to improving the quality of life in farming communities around the world, has announced a strategic partnership with Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation (Helvetas) to strengthen agricultural entrepreneurship and support economic recovery across Ukraine. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agricultural and food processing sectors rebuild, adapt, and thrive despite the ongoing challenges created by years of conflict and economic disruption.
The initiative forms part of the broader Ukraine Economic Resilience Program (ERP), a Swiss-funded program implemented by Helvetas in collaboration with a consortium of development partners. Through financial support from the AGCO Foundation, Helvetas will expand its efforts to assist agricultural entrepreneurs, improve workforce skills, and strengthen vocational education systems in key regions of Ukraine.
Supporting a Critical Agricultural Sector
Agriculture has long been one of Ukraine’s most important industries, contributing significantly to the country’s economy while supplying grains, oilseeds, and other agricultural commodities to global markets. However, the sector has experienced severe disruptions due to conflict, including damaged infrastructure, displaced workers, interrupted supply chains, and reduced access to financing.
Despite these challenges, agriculture continues to serve as a cornerstone of Ukraine’s economic resilience. Supporting farmers, food processors, and agricultural entrepreneurs has therefore become essential not only for rebuilding local economies but also for maintaining the country’s role in global food security.
Recognizing these needs, the AGCO Foundation and Helvetas are focusing their partnership on helping agricultural businesses recover through practical investments that promote innovation, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and sustainable economic growth.
Rather than offering only short-term relief, the initiative seeks to create long-lasting economic opportunities that enable businesses to become more competitive and resilient in an evolving marketplace.
Building Stronger Rural Economies
Under the partnership, the Ukraine Economic Resilience Program will be implemented across four strategically important regions: Kharkiv, Cherkasy, Odesa, and Vinnytsia. These regions represent diverse agricultural production areas and have experienced varying degrees of economic disruption, making them priority locations for recovery efforts.
A major objective of the program is to strengthen local economies by helping agricultural enterprises restore operations, expand production capacity, and respond to changing market conditions. By improving business performance and creating employment opportunities, the initiative aims to stimulate broader regional economic development.
The program also places a strong emphasis on inclusion by ensuring that support reaches vulnerable populations that have been disproportionately affected by recent events. Beneficiaries will include internally displaced persons, military veterans transitioning back into civilian employment, women entrepreneurs, and individuals with disabilities seeking new economic opportunities.
Focus on Enterprise Development
Funding provided by the AGCO Foundation will allow Helvetas to implement several targeted activities designed to accelerate business growth and improve employment outcomes.
One of the central components of the initiative involves providing 20 microgrants to agricultural and food-processing businesses. These grants will help entrepreneurs launch new ventures, expand existing operations, purchase essential equipment, or adopt new technologies that improve productivity and competitiveness.
By supporting business growth, the grants are also expected to preserve and create employment opportunities in communities where economic recovery remains particularly challenging.

In addition to financial assistance, the program recognizes that access to skilled workers is essential for long-term business success. As a result, approximately 95 individuals will participate in specialized reskilling programs designed to equip them with practical, market-relevant skills for employment in agriculture and food processing industries.
These workforce development efforts are intended to address labor shortages while improving career opportunities for people whose employment prospects have been affected by the ongoing economic crisis.
Strengthening Agricultural Education
Beyond direct support for businesses and workers, the partnership also seeks to improve the long-term capacity of Ukraine’s agricultural workforce by investing in vocational education.
The initiative will strengthen two vocational education institutions, enabling them to deliver modern, industry-focused agricultural training programs aligned with current labor market needs. Enhanced educational resources, updated curricula, and stronger connections with employers will help ensure that graduates possess the practical skills required by today’s agricultural businesses.
Improving vocational education not only benefits students but also creates a more reliable pipeline of qualified workers for the agricultural sector, supporting productivity and innovation for years to come.
Commitment to Sustainable Recovery
Roger Batkin, Board Chair of the AGCO Foundation, emphasized that the organization remains committed to supporting long-term agricultural and economic development through targeted investments in enterprise growth, workforce training, and institutional capacity building.
“We continue to support long-term agricultural and economic development through targeted actions on enterprise development, as well as building workforce skills and institutional capacity,” Batkin said.
His comments reflect the Foundation’s broader mission of helping farming communities become more resilient while creating opportunities for sustainable economic growth.
Thomas Mauget, Humanitarian Response Coordinator at Helvetas, highlighted the importance of moving beyond emergency assistance toward more durable economic solutions.
“This program contributes to more dynamic, resilient and competitive local economies by linking enterprise development with skills and market-relevant training,” Mauget said. “It moves beyond short-term support towards sustainable economic recovery that can be carried forward by local actors.”
Creating Long-Term Impact
The partnership between the AGCO Foundation and Helvetas represents a comprehensive approach to rebuilding Ukraine’s agricultural economy. By combining financial assistance, entrepreneurship support, vocational training, and workforce development, the initiative addresses several of the most pressing barriers facing agricultural businesses today.
As local enterprises regain stability and expand operations, they are expected to generate new employment opportunities, strengthen regional food systems, and contribute to broader economic recovery efforts. The emphasis on supporting vulnerable populations further ensures that the benefits of recovery are shared across communities most affected by displacement and economic hardship.
Ultimately, the collaboration aims to foster resilient agricultural businesses capable of adapting to changing market conditions while laying the foundation for stronger, more competitive rural economies. Through strategic investments in people, enterprises, and educational institutions, the AGCO Foundation and Helvetas hope to help Ukraine’s agricultural sector continue serving as a vital engine of national recovery and long-term sustainable development.
