Agriculture’s AI Transformation Through FBN and Google AI Futures Fund Partnership

Farmers Business Network® (FBN), a leading digital farmer-to-farmer network and agricultural marketplace, has announced a new partnership with the Google AI Futures Fund (AIFF) aimed at accelerating the development and adoption of advanced artificial intelligence technologies for family farms.

The collaboration will focus on helping FBN develop what the company describes as agriculture’s first AI Context Engine for farmers. The technology is intended to serve as a foundational operating platform for a new generation of AI-powered, task-specific solutions designed to help farmers manage increasingly complex agricultural decisions.

Building a More Connected AI Platform for Agriculture

Artificial intelligence is already being used across agriculture to provide farmers with recommendations and insights on areas such as crop production, pest management, seed selection and equipment. However, many existing AI applications are designed to address individual questions or isolated parts of a farm operation.

FBN and Google AI Futures Fund are seeking to address this limitation by developing an AI system capable of understanding a farm more comprehensively.

The proposed AI Context Engine is designed to bring together multiple categories of information associated with an individual farm. These include agronomic conditions, financial considerations, equipment information, operational data, environmental factors and market conditions.

By connecting these different sources of information, the system is intended to provide AI agents with a broader understanding of the circumstances surrounding a farmer’s decisions. Rather than considering individual issues independently, future AI applications could potentially evaluate how different decisions interact with one another across the farm.

For example, a farm management decision may involve more than agronomic considerations. A farmer may also need to evaluate input costs, available equipment, weather conditions, crop prices, field conditions, timing and other operational factors. An AI system with access to a broader farm context could help analyze these interconnected considerations.

Supporting Agentic AI Applications

A central objective of the Context Engine is to create an infrastructure that can support a growing range of specialized AI agents.

These agents could be designed to perform specific tasks while operating with a shared understanding of the farmer’s operation. The approach could allow different AI applications to work from the same underlying farm context rather than requiring farmers to repeatedly provide information or operate disconnected software systems.

FBN also plans to connect these capabilities with its commercial platform. This could allow AI-generated insights to move beyond recommendations and potentially support executable commercial actions.

The company expects the technology to provide farmers with more comprehensive insights into decisions involving agronomy, finances, equipment and farm operations while also accounting for external environmental and market conditions.

FBN plans to introduce early versions of the technology to farmers during the fall.

Google to Provide Access to Advanced AI Technology

As part of the partnership, Google will provide FBN with early access to frontier AI models and expertise related to model development.

The two organizations will work together to assess advanced AI models against complex agricultural reasoning tasks. Agriculture presents unique challenges for AI systems because farming decisions frequently depend on multiple variables that can change according to location, weather, crop type, market conditions, field characteristics and individual management practices.

Testing advanced models against real-world agricultural use cases is therefore expected to help the companies understand where AI can deliver meaningful value to farmers and where additional development may be required.

The partnership is also intended to contribute to improving AI performance in practical agricultural applications. By evaluating AI systems against the types of complex questions and decisions farmers face in their daily operations, FBN and Google aim to advance the usefulness of AI beyond generalized tools and toward more specialized agricultural applications.

Focusing on Family Farm Needs

FBN said the partnership builds on the trust it has developed with farmers over the past decade. The company has established a large farmer network in the United States and Canada and has increasingly incorporated artificial intelligence into its agricultural technology offerings.

Jonathan Silber, Co-Founder and Director of the AI Futures Fund, said FBN’s established relationship with hundreds of thousands of farmers provides an important foundation for developing practical agricultural AI.

According to Silber, the partnership is intended to contribute to the future of farming, food consumption and sustainable agriculture by bringing advanced AI capabilities closer to farmers and their everyday operations.

The collaboration reflects a broader shift in agricultural technology toward AI systems that can work with large amounts of specialized farm information rather than relying solely on generalized knowledge.

Keeping Farmers in Control of Their Data

FBN CEO Diego Casanello emphasized that the company’s focus is on helping family farms remain competitive while gaining access to emerging technologies.

He said that while software development is no longer the primary obstacle to deploying AI solutions, access to rich and relevant farm context remains a major challenge.

FBN’s Context Engine for Agriculture is intended to address that challenge by creating a structured foundation through which AI systems can understand the unique circumstances of individual farms.

The company also intends for its technology to support its existing AI system, Norm™, as well as potential third-party developers in the future. This could create an ecosystem in which developers can build additional agricultural applications using the Context Engine while farmers retain control over their farm information.

Data control is an important component of the initiative because agricultural data can include highly detailed information about production practices, input usage, equipment, financial decisions, field conditions and business operations.

By placing farmers in control of their data, FBN aims to develop AI applications that provide useful recommendations while maintaining the farmer’s authority over how information is used.

Expanding the Role of Norm AI Ag Advisor

FBN’s work with Google builds on the company’s existing experience with agricultural artificial intelligence.

The company launched Norm AI Ag Advisor™ in 2023, positioning it among the early AI platforms specifically developed to support farmers.

Norm has since expanded to serve FBN’s more than 140,000 members. The platform provides farmers with insights across a variety of agricultural topics, including crop protection, seed selection and equipment maintenance.

Rather than offering identical information to every user, Norm is designed to provide advice based on the individual farmer’s circumstances. The development of the Context Engine is intended to expand this approach by giving AI systems access to a broader range of interconnected information.

The next phase could therefore move agricultural AI from answering individual questions toward helping farmers evaluate complicated decisions involving multiple areas of their businesses.

Toward the Next Generation of Agricultural AI

The partnership between FBN and Google AI Futures Fund represents an effort to establish a deeper technological foundation for AI applications in agriculture.

As farms become increasingly data-driven, farmers are managing information from numerous sources while also navigating changing weather patterns, input costs, commodity markets, equipment requirements and operational constraints. Bringing these factors together could create opportunities for AI systems to provide more context-aware assistance.

FBN’s planned AI Context Engine is intended to provide that foundation. By combining farm-specific information with advanced AI models, the company aims to create tools capable of understanding the broader circumstances behind individual agricultural decisions.

The initial versions planned for release this fall are expected to provide an early look at how this approach can be applied in real farming environments.

With Google providing access to advanced models and AI expertise, and FBN contributing its agricultural data environment, farmer network and experience with farm-focused AI, the collaboration is positioned around developing practical technologies for family farms.

The longer-term objective is to create an AI infrastructure that can support FBN’s Norm platform as well as future applications developed by other technology providers. If successful, the Context Engine could provide a common foundation for specialized AI agents capable of assisting farmers across different aspects of their operations.

For FBN, the initiative builds on a decade of work connecting farmers through digital technology while extending that mission into the rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence. The company believes that giving AI systems richer agricultural context can help create more relevant tools while ensuring farmers remain at the center of decisions involving their operations and data.
