Bayer AG has solidified its dedication to sustainability by entering a substantial long-term agreement with Wuppertaler Stadtwerke (WSW), the public utility company of Wuppertal in North Rhein-Westphalia, Germany, to procure electricity from renewable sources.
In this significant partnership, WSW will provide Bayer with over 120 GWh of wind and/or solar energy sourced from German wind and solar parks. This amount is equivalent to powering approximately 30,000 households annually. Through this agreement, Bayer’s facilities in Darmstadt, Weimar, Bitterfeld, Bergkamen, Berlin, and Wuppertal will exclusively rely on renewable energy sources, marking a notable shift towards sustainability. The energy supply will be facilitated through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), ensuring a consistent and long-term provision of renewable electricity while fostering the development of new eco-friendly power generation infrastructure.
Matthias Berninger, Head of Public Affairs, Science, Sustainability & HSE at Bayer, underscores the significance of this move in reducing the company’s carbon footprint, highlighting a similar commitment made in the United States. This collaboration with Wuppertaler Stadtwerke further reinforces Bayer’s global sustainability efforts.
Maik Eckelmann, Head of the Elberfeld Supply Centre, expresses satisfaction in expanding the longstanding partnership between Bayer and WSW, emphasizing the journey towards sustainable energy provision.
WSW CEO Markus Hilkenbach welcomes the extended collaboration with Bayer, recognizing it as a pivotal step in advancing the energy transition. This partnership aligns with WSW’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, contributing to environmental and climate protection efforts.
Aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Bayer aims to achieve climate neutrality in its business operations by 2030. As part of this initiative, the company plans to source 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by the same year. Bayer’s reduction targets have received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative, further reinforcing its commitment to mitigating climate change through science-driven strategies.
