Green Plains’ Superior, Iowa, Facility Reaches One Billion Gallons of Ethanol Production

Green Plains Inc. has reached a major production milestone at its Superior, Iowa, ethanol facility, with the plant producing its one-billionth gallon of ethanol. The achievement highlights nearly two decades of continuous operations at one of the company’s early production assets and underscores the facility’s longstanding role in the agricultural economy of Northwest Iowa and the surrounding region.

The milestone was announced by Green Plains Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRE), which said the Superior facility has remained an important part of its production network since beginning operations in 2008. Over the years, the facility has supported regional agriculture by providing a dependable market for locally produced grain while contributing to employment, transportation activity, and broader economic development across the area.

With nearly 20 years of operating history, the Superior facility has become an established part of the local agricultural landscape. The plant currently employs nearly 50 team members and works with a broad network of farmers, grain haulers, contractors, suppliers, and other agribusiness partners.

Together, these relationships connect the ethanol facility to agricultural communities throughout Northwest Iowa and Southwest Minnesota.

A Major Milestone for Green Plains

Producing one billion gallons of ethanol represents a significant operational achievement for the Superior facility. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has operated through changing market conditions, evolving agricultural dynamics, and developments across the renewable fuels industry.

Chris Osowski, President and Chief Executive Officer of Green Plains, described the milestone as a reflection of the facility’s long-term focus on reliable operations and safety.

“Producing one billion gallons of ethanol is a meaningful accomplishment that represents nearly two decades of consistent execution,” Osowski said.

According to Osowski, reaching the milestone required sustained attention to safety, reliability, and operational performance. He said the achievement demonstrates the commitment of employees who have maintained the facility’s operations over many years.

The company views the milestone not simply as a measure of production volume but also as an indication of the operational foundation established at the facility since it began production.

“Reaching this milestone requires an unwavering focus on safety, reliability, and operational excellence year after year,” Osowski said. “The facility has demonstrated that commitment throughout its history, and this milestone reflects the dedication of our team and the strong operational foundation they have built.”

Supporting Regional Agriculture

The Superior facility was originally developed by Superior Ethanol LLC under the leadership of Iowa agricultural entrepreneur Brian Peterson, who is now a Green Plains Board Member. From the beginning, the project was designed around the needs of regional agriculture.

The facility was developed to provide local grain producers with a dependable market for their crops while helping generate long-term economic opportunities in Northwest Iowa.

That relationship between ethanol production and agriculture remains central to the facility’s role in the region. Ethanol plants purchase large volumes of corn and other agricultural commodities, creating an important source of demand for farmers located within their surrounding supply areas.

For farmers and agricultural businesses, the presence of a nearby processing facility can also help strengthen local grain markets and contribute to the broader agricultural supply chain. Grain transportation, storage, equipment services, maintenance contractors, and other supporting businesses can all benefit from ongoing plant operations.

The Superior facility therefore represents more than an ethanol production site. Its operations are connected to a wider network of agricultural businesses and workers across Iowa and neighboring Minnesota.

Nearly Two Decades of Operation

When the Superior facility was commissioned in 2008, it became one of the early production assets in what would become Green Plains’ broader ethanol platform. Nearly two decades later, the facility continues to play a role in the company’s operations.

Over that period, the ethanol industry has experienced significant changes. Producers have navigated shifts in commodity markets, transportation costs, energy demand, environmental priorities, and renewable fuel policies. Facilities operating successfully over an extended period must continually maintain equipment, manage production efficiency, and adapt to changing market conditions.

The one-billion-gallon milestone reflects the cumulative output achieved through that sustained operational effort.

For the employees working at Superior, the achievement also represents years of maintaining day-to-day production activities. Ethanol manufacturing requires continuous attention to plant safety, equipment performance, quality control, logistics, and production management.

Green Plains said the facility’s current workforce of nearly 50 employees remains an important contributor to its continued operation.

Building on a Local Vision

Brian Peterson, founder of Superior Ethanol and a Green Plains Board Member, said the facility was established with the goal of creating lasting value for agriculture and the surrounding communities.

“When we first envisioned this facility, we believed it could create long-term value for local agriculture and the surrounding communities,” Peterson said.

The one-billion-gallon achievement, he added, demonstrates the potential of that original vision.

“Nearly two decades later, this milestone shows what can happen when you invest in a strong facility, create a dependable market for local grain, and remain committed to the region for the long term,” Peterson said.

His comments highlight the connection between the original development of the facility and its continued contribution to the regional economy.

Economic Importance Beyond Ethanol Production

The economic impact of an ethanol facility extends beyond the gallons of fuel produced. A functioning plant can serve as an important link between agricultural producers and downstream markets while generating activity for businesses involved in transportation, maintenance, equipment, logistics, and other services.

In the case of the Superior facility, Green Plains says its operations support farmers and agricultural partners across Northwest Iowa and Southwest Minnesota. The facility’s purchasing activity helps connect regional grain production with the renewable fuels market.

The plant’s nearly 50 employees also contribute to the local workforce, while contractors and service providers support ongoing operations.

As the facility reaches the one-billion-gallon mark, its history illustrates how an agricultural processing operation can become integrated into the economy of the community where it operates.
