Kyocera Corporation has announced plans to launch a new circulating inkjet printhead designed to support the evolving needs of the label and packaging printing industry. The company expects to begin sales of the new KJ4A-EX600RC-HX printhead in November 2026.
Developed for digital printing applications, the new printhead is designed to support a broad range of decorative printing requirements, including applications using white ink, varnish ink, and foil decoration. By combining high-speed printing with compatibility with a wider range of ink viscosities, Kyocera aims to help printers respond to growing demand for customized labels, sophisticated packaging finishes, and short-run production.
The introduction comes as the printing industry continues its transition toward digital production. Increasing demand for small-lot and high-mix manufacturing is encouraging printers to adopt technologies that can deliver flexibility, consistent quality, and faster turnaround times. At the same time, packaging manufacturers are seeking new ways to create visually distinctive products through specialty inks and decorative effects.
Addressing Changing Requirements in Label and Packaging Printing
Digital printing has become increasingly important across the label and packaging sectors because it allows manufacturers to produce customized products without relying exclusively on traditional production processes. This is particularly valuable as brands seek greater flexibility in packaging design and respond to changing consumer preferences.
Within the label market, decorative effects are becoming an important part of product presentation. White ink can provide vivid and opaque colors on a variety of substrates, while varnish can create glossy, tactile, and three-dimensional effects. Foil decoration can also contribute metallic and premium visual effects.
However, these applications can place additional demands on printing equipment. Printers need systems capable of handling specialty inks while maintaining stable ink ejection, consistent image quality, and reliable production speeds.
Kyocera developed the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX to address these requirements. The new printhead incorporates the company’s proprietary fluid-channel technology, which circulates ink near the nozzles. This design is intended to help maintain stable printing while supporting inks with higher viscosity and pigment content.
Ink Circulation Technology Designed for Stable Printing
One of the key characteristics of the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX is its proprietary structure for circulating ink close to the nozzle area.
Ink circulation can play an important role in maintaining consistent printing performance. Inks containing pigments or other components may be susceptible to settling when they remain stationary for extended periods. Ink can also dry around nozzle areas under certain operating conditions.
Kyocera’s fluid-path design is intended to reduce these issues by continuously circulating ink near the nozzles. The approach helps prevent ink components from settling and supports more uniform ink temperature.
These characteristics are designed to contribute to stable droplet ejection, particularly when printing with relatively high-viscosity or pigment-based inks. For label and packaging printers, maintaining consistent ink delivery can be important for preserving print quality throughout a production run.
The circulation structure may also help reduce maintenance requirements associated with restarting the printing system. By helping maintain ink conditions around the nozzle area, the design can support operations that require cleaning and restarting the printhead.
Larger Droplet Volume for High-Opacity Printing
Another important feature of the new printhead is its maximum droplet volume of 21 picoliters (pL).
According to Kyocera, this represents a 23% increase compared with the company’s previous KJ4A-AL model. A larger ink droplet can deliver a greater quantity of ink to the substrate, which can be particularly useful for applications requiring high opacity or heavier ink deposition.

White ink is one example where increased ink deposition can be valuable. Because white ink is often used as an opaque base layer, sufficient coverage can help reduce the visibility of the underlying substrate and provide a stronger foundation for subsequent colors.
The larger droplet volume can also support decorative applications involving varnish and foil effects. Printers can use these capabilities to create thicker layers and more pronounced surface effects, potentially expanding the range of visual and tactile finishes available through digital printing.
For packaging producers, this can provide additional opportunities to differentiate products through specialized finishes while retaining the flexibility associated with digital production.
Wider Ink Viscosity Compatibility
The KJ4A-EX600RC-HX also expands the range of compatible ink viscosities.
The new printhead supports inks with viscosities ranging from 8 to 11 mPa·s, compared with the 6 to 7 mPa·s range supported by previous models cited by Kyocera.
Ink viscosity describes the resistance of a liquid to flow. Different ink formulations can have different viscosity characteristics depending on their composition and intended application. By supporting a broader viscosity range, the new printhead is designed to accommodate a wider selection of ink formulations.
This capability can be particularly relevant for specialty printing applications. Label and packaging manufacturers often require different inks to achieve specific colors, textures, opacity levels, gloss characteristics, or decorative effects.
A broader compatibility range can therefore provide equipment manufacturers and printers with greater flexibility when developing or selecting ink systems for particular applications.
Printing Speeds Up to 100 Meters per Minute
Productivity is another major focus of the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX.
Kyocera has increased the printhead’s drive frequency from 20 kHz in the previous KJ4A-AL model to 40 kHz in the new product. Drive frequency controls the timing of ink droplet ejection, and the increased frequency contributes to the printhead’s higher operating speed.
With this capability, the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX can achieve printing speeds of up to 100 meters per minute.
Kyocera states that this represents one of the company’s highest productivity levels among its UV ink-compatible printheads as of September 2026.
Higher printing speeds can be particularly important for commercial and industrial applications, where manufacturers need to balance print quality with production throughput. Faster digital printing can help processors manage larger production volumes while retaining the advantages of variable and customized printing.
Supporting More Flexible Digital Printing Applications
The combination of ink circulation, increased droplet volume, broader viscosity compatibility, and higher printing frequency gives the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX a range of capabilities aimed at modern label and packaging production.
The technology is designed to support applications that require more than standard four-color printing. White ink, varnish, and foil decoration can be used to create packaging with stronger visual contrast, glossy surfaces, metallic appearances, and three-dimensional effects.
At the same time, compatibility with a wider range of inks can help broaden the types of materials and applications that can be considered for digital production.
These capabilities align with broader changes in the printing industry, where manufacturers are increasingly looking for production technologies that can accommodate shorter runs, more frequent design changes, customization, and specialty effects.
Responding to Industry Demand
The development of the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX reflects Kyocera’s focus on addressing the technical requirements emerging from the digital printing market.
As brands and packaging producers seek more distinctive designs, printing equipment must increasingly accommodate specialty inks and decorative processes without compromising reliability or productivity. At the same time, printers need technologies that can simplify production and reduce interruptions caused by maintenance or ink-management issues.
Kyocera’s new printhead is designed to address these requirements through a combination of fluid management and high-speed inkjet technology.
The circulation of ink near the nozzles is intended to promote stable operation, while the 21 pL maximum droplet volume provides greater ink deposition capability. The expanded 8–11 mPa·s viscosity range increases ink compatibility, and the 40 kHz drive frequency enables speeds of up to 100 meters per minute.
A New Option for Label and Packaging Manufacturers
Kyocera plans to begin sales of the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX in November 2026. The company expects the new printhead to contribute to the continued development of digital printing technologies for labels and packaging.
As the market continues moving toward shorter production runs, customized designs, premium finishes, and more flexible manufacturing, printhead technology will remain an important component of digital production systems.
With support for white ink, varnish ink, foil decoration, higher-viscosity formulations, and high-speed operation, the KJ4A-EX600RC-HX is positioned as a printhead designed for applications where both decorative quality and production efficiency are important.
Kyocera’s latest development demonstrates how advances in inkjet printhead architecture can help expand the possibilities of digital label and packaging production. By combining stable ink circulation with larger droplet volumes, broader ink compatibility, and faster operation, the company aims to provide printing technology capable of meeting the industry’s changing requirements.
