Recess Leads Walmart’s New “Mood & Mind” Collection as Relaxation Beverages Enter the Mass Market

Recess, a brand widely recognized for helping establish the modern relaxation beverage category, is partnering with Walmart to expand the presence of functional beverages designed around mood, relaxation and mental well-being. The collaboration introduces a dedicated “Mood & Mind” beverage set at Walmart, giving shoppers a more clearly defined section for drinks intended to support specific occasions and lifestyle needs.

The new retail initiative reflects a broader shift in the beverage industry, where consumers are increasingly selecting drinks based not only on flavor or refreshment but also on the particular moment they are experiencing. Whether shoppers are looking for energy and concentration during the day or a beverage that complements relaxation and unwinding, functional drinks are becoming an increasingly visible part of the beverage aisle.

According to Walmart, the new “Mood & Mind” set is designed to make it easier for shoppers to find beverages that align with these different occasions. Recess will be among the brands featured in the new assortment, reflecting its established position in the relaxation beverage segment.

“Just as we did with the Modern Soda category, Walmart is listening to what customers tell us they want and moving quickly to deliver for them,” said Brian Salmon, Vice President of Beverage at Walmart U.S. “More recently, customers are choosing beverages based on the moment — whether they’re looking for energy and focus or something that fits into relaxing and unwinding. Recess helped define relaxation beverages, so when we set out to create Mood & Mind, they were a must-have for the assortment.”

Recess Built Its Brand Around Relaxation

Recess was founded around the idea of providing consumers with an alternative way to approach the pressures and stresses of modern life. Rather than positioning itself primarily as a traditional soft drink, energy drink or flavored sparkling water, the company developed its products around the occasion of taking a break and relaxing.

One of the brand’s early products, Recess Mood, combined sparkling water with ingredients such as magnesium and adaptogens. The product was designed to provide consumers with a familiar beverage format while introducing functional ingredients associated with relaxation and mood-focused consumption.

The strategy helped Recess establish a distinct position within the growing functional beverage market. At a time when energy drinks had already created a recognizable beverage category centered on providing consumers with a boost, Recess sought to develop a complementary occasion around slowing down, taking a break and unwinding.

“When we launched Recess eight years ago, consumers understood the idea of a relaxation beverage before much of the industry did,” said Ben Witte, founder and co-CEO of Recess. “We saw an opportunity to introduce a new type of functional beverage focused on helping people relax and unwind, just as energy drinks had built around the need for a boost. Walmart is seeing that opportunity in its own shopper data. Working together to give the category a dedicated place in the aisle is an exciting next step.”

Functional Beverages Continue to Expand

The partnership arrives as consumer interest in functional beverages continues to develop across multiple categories. Functional drinks have expanded beyond traditional areas such as energy and sports hydration, with brands increasingly focusing on areas including gut health, protein, mental wellness, relaxation and mood support.

According to SPINS data cited by Recess, mood-support beverages are growing faster than several other functional beverage segments, including gut health, protein support, energy and hydration. The trend indicates that consumers are increasingly interested in products positioned around specific lifestyle needs and consumption occasions.

For retailers, this evolution creates an opportunity to organize beverage selections in ways that go beyond traditional categories such as soda, juice, water and energy drinks. The “Mood & Mind” concept provides another framework for helping shoppers identify beverages according to the function or occasion they are seeking.

Rather than requiring consumers to search throughout the beverage aisle for products with particular functional ingredients or benefits, a dedicated set can bring products with similar positioning together in one location.

The approach also reflects the growing importance of occasion-based merchandising in the beverage industry. Consumers may purchase different beverages depending on whether they are beginning their day, exercising, working, socializing or preparing to relax. By creating a dedicated space for mood- and mind-focused products, Walmart is incorporating those consumer occasions into its retail strategy.

Walmart Gives Recess Broader Retail Visibility

For Recess, the Walmart partnership represents an expansion of its retail presence while also providing additional visibility for the broader relaxation beverage category.

Kyle Thomas, co-CEO and President of Recess, described Walmart’s decision to create the dedicated set as a significant development for the category.

“This expansion signifies something far beyond just Recess – it’s proof of an exploding category,” Thomas said. “As the pioneer of the space, this validation from Walmart is evident that Recess’ bet on an ‘unwind’ category was never destined to be niche; it’s built for the mass consumer.”

The new assortment is expected to help introduce more shoppers to relaxation-oriented functional beverages while giving established products a more prominent position within Walmart stores.

Retail placement can play an important role in how emerging beverage categories develop. Dedicated merchandising allows shoppers to recognize a category more easily and can create a stronger connection between a product and the occasion it is intended to serve.

For brands such as Recess, this can also provide an opportunity to move functional relaxation beverages from a specialized or emerging niche into a more mainstream retail environment.

Recess Expands Its Walmart Assortment

As part of the new “Mood & Mind” set, Recess Mood Singles and 4-Packs will be available across more than 1,000 Walmart stores. The assortment will focus on some of the brand’s top-selling products while also introducing a new format and flavor to the retailer.

Among the additions is a new Pink Lemonade 12-ounce single. The product expands Recess Mood’s presence within Walmart while providing shoppers with another flavor option in a convenient single-serve format.

The availability of both singles and multipacks gives consumers different purchasing options depending on how they intend to use the beverages. Single-serve products can be convenient for shoppers looking to try a product or enjoy one beverage during a particular occasion, while multipacks can support regular consumption at home or throughout the week.

A New Chapter for Mood-Focused Beverages

The creation of Walmart’s “Mood & Mind” set represents a broader development in how functional beverages are being positioned within mainstream retail. As shoppers become more familiar with beverages designed around specific needs and occasions, retailers are adapting their assortments to make these products easier to discover.

Recess’ participation in the new set builds on the company’s strategy of positioning relaxation as a recognizable beverage occasion. Its products join a retail environment where functional beverages are increasingly being organized around what consumers want from their drinks rather than simply the traditional beverage categories they occupy.

The partnership between Recess and Walmart therefore extends beyond the introduction of additional products in stores. It reflects the continued evolution of the functional beverage market and the growing effort by retailers and brands to connect products with everyday consumer occasions.

With Recess Mood Singles and 4-Packs rolling out across more than 1,000 Walmart locations and the new Pink Lemonade 12-ounce single joining the assortment, the collaboration gives the relaxation beverage category another opportunity to reach a broader audience. At the same time, Walmart’s dedicated “Mood & Mind” set creates a more visible retail destination for consumers exploring beverages focused on mood, relaxation and other functional needs.
