New Regenerative Agriculture Partnership in Europe Leads to Reduced Carbon Emissions for Farmers

ADM and Bayer Expand Partnership to Boost Regenerative Agriculture in Europe

ADM and Bayer have announced an extension of their collaboration aimed at advancing regenerative agricultural practices among farmers across Europe. The initiative, which began with a feasibility study last year, focused on assessing the benefits of regenerative agriculture in reducing carbon emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and improving soil health. Initial findings from the study, conducted with oilseed rape farmers covering 9,000 hectares in Poland, indicated a 15% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional farming methods. Comprehensive adoption of regenerative practices could potentially achieve reductions of up to 40%.

In the next phase of the partnership, the program will broaden its scope to include additional crops such as corn, wheat, and barley, expanding geographically across Eastern Europe. Participating farmers will receive financial and technical support to implement regenerative practices like minimum tillage, cover crops, companion crops, nutrient management, organic matter utilization, and crop rotation.

ADM will financially compensate farmers for each qualifying hectare, verified using Bayer’s digital tools in collaboration with Trinity Agtech’s Sandy platform, a scientifically backed solution that ensures accuracy and compliance with industry standards.

In addition to financial incentives, farmers will benefit from agronomic guidance tailored to regional conditions, with on-farm assessments and customized development plans. Peer learning opportunities will enable farmers to share experiences and explore different techniques for implementing regenerative practices effectively.

Karol Pietnoczka, a farmer from West Pomerania, shared his experience: “We have been practicing regenerative agriculture for 15 years, constantly improving based on results from smaller trials. These activities have significantly reduced our carbon footprint.”

Piotr Hulanicki from Warmia-Masuria added, “Regenerative practices are not only profitable but also contribute to overall farm success when balanced with other agronomic methods.”

Candy Siekmann, ADM’s director of Climate Smart Agriculture Origination, emphasized the importance of regenerative agriculture in sustainability and consumer trust: “Our research shows consumers prefer retailers and brands implementing regenerative practices. By partnering with Bayer, we aim to build a resilient, sustainable supply chain with a lower carbon footprint.”

Lionnel Alexandre, Bayer’s Carbon Business Lead for EMEA, highlighted the project’s collaborative approach: “This partnership with ADM underscores our commitment to advancing regenerative agriculture using digital and scientific capabilities across Europe.”

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainable agriculture, leveraging technology and expertise to empower farmers and enhance environmental stewardship in the region.
