California Pizza Kitchen Teams Up With T-ROC Global to Expand Automated Retail Kiosks Nationwide

California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), the restaurant brand known for transforming the traditional pizza category through California-inspired flavors and innovative menu concepts, is taking another major step in expanding its reach beyond conventional restaurant locations. The company has announced a strategic partnership with T-ROC Global, a technology-enabled retail solutions provider, to develop and scale a nationwide network of automated CPK food retail machines.

Under the new partnership, T-ROC Global will implement and operate as many as 1,000 CPK automated retail machines across the United States over the next three years. The initiative is designed to make CPK menu favorites available in high-traffic locations where building and operating a full-service restaurant may not be practical, while still giving consumers access to premium, convenient food options.

The expansion represents a significant evolution in CPK’s approach to meeting customers wherever they are. Rather than limiting the brand experience to traditional restaurants, the automated retail strategy will bring CPK food to a broader range of environments, including airports, universities, hospitals, hotels, office buildings, residential communities, electric vehicle charging stations, sports venues and other high-volume destinations.

For consumers, the concept is intended to combine the convenience of automated retail with the quality and menu variety associated with CPK restaurants. The company believes this model can create new opportunities to serve customers during occasions when they want a quick meal but may not have access to a traditional restaurant.

“CPK has spent decades finding new ways to meet consumers wherever they are,” said Michael Beacham, President of California Pizza Kitchen Global. The company’s reach has already expanded beyond its restaurant network through airport and non-traditional locations, off-site events and its presence in the grocery channel, where CPK has established itself as a premium pizza brand for approximately 25 years.

Beacham said the partnership with T-ROC will accelerate CPK’s automated retail strategy and introduce the brand to new occasions and locations. These include environments where consumers are looking for convenient, high-quality food while traveling, working, studying, living or attending events.

The automated machines are designed to offer considerably more than the traditional vending-machine experience. CPK and T-ROC are incorporating TurboChef-powered cooking technology, data-driven intelligence and interactive touchscreen interfaces into the machines. These technologies are intended to provide consumers with a restaurant-style ordering and preparation experience in an automated environment.

One of the key features of the system is its speed. A CPK pizza can be prepared in as little as 90 seconds, allowing customers to receive a hot meal quickly without waiting for a conventional restaurant kitchen to prepare an order. The combination of automated preparation, digital ordering and rapid cooking is expected to make the machines particularly attractive for locations where convenience and speed are important.

The companies also plan to go beyond pizza. The automated retail lineup is expected to feature several additional CPK favorites, giving consumers access to a broader selection of meals and desserts. Planned offerings include Kung Pao Spaghetti, Bolognese Spaghetti and Mac ‘N’ Cheese in Classic, BBQ Chicken and Burnt Ends varieties. CPK’s signature Butter Cake will also be included, providing a dessert option alongside the savory menu items.

According to Brett Beveridge, CEO and Founder of T-ROC Global, CPK’s strong brand recognition and food portfolio make it particularly well suited to automated retail. He noted that consumer expectations are increasingly centered on convenience and accessibility, with customers wanting to purchase products and services from their favorite brands wherever they happen to be.

The partnership brings together CPK’s established brand and menu expertise with T-ROC’s nationwide retail infrastructure and technology capabilities. T-ROC intends to use its existing resources to support the deployment and operation of the machines at a substantial national scale.

The company’s infrastructure includes 32 warehouses, a dedicated fleet of vans and thousands of technicians positioned throughout the country. These resources will support the installation, replenishment, maintenance and servicing of CPK automated retail machines. T-ROC will also provide operational support to help ensure the machines remain stocked and functioning properly.

The initial rollout will focus on clusters of at least 20 machines across 30 major U.S. markets. By establishing concentrated groups of machines instead of deploying them randomly across the country, the companies expect to create stronger market density and improve operational efficiency. The approach is intended to provide a foundation for further expansion as the network grows.

CPK is not entering the automated retail market for the first time. The company has been testing the concept since last year, gaining experience through machines already operating at several major airports. Current locations include Boston Logan International Airport, Atlanta, Dallas Love Field and Dayton. The company also plans to activate another 15 machines at universities by the end of the year.

The expanded agreement with T-ROC is expected to significantly accelerate that early-stage strategy. In addition to developing and scaling its own network of CPK automated retail machines, T-ROC will serve as a nationwide service provider for CPK’s other automated retail operating partners.

That expanded role will cover a wide range of services, including product replenishment, break/fix maintenance, warehousing, logistics, execution training and kiosk management technologies. T-ROC will also assist with identifying suitable venues for future machine installations.

Venue selection will be particularly important to the strategy because automated retail depends heavily on consumer traffic, location convenience and the availability of food options. By targeting airports, universities, healthcare facilities, workplaces, residential communities, sports venues and other destinations, CPK aims to reach consumers during a variety of everyday and travel-related occasions.

The initiative also reflects broader changes in the food-service and retail industries, where consumers increasingly expect fast, digitally enabled purchasing experiences. Automated food technology can allow established restaurant brands to expand into locations that cannot support a full restaurant footprint while maintaining a recognizable menu and brand identity.

For CPK, the partnership provides another channel through which the company can extend its California-inspired food experience to new consumers. For T-ROC, the agreement represents an opportunity to apply its technology, logistics and service infrastructure to a nationally recognized restaurant brand.

As the three-year rollout progresses, the companies expect the automated machines to become an increasingly visible part of CPK’s broader distribution strategy. By combining restaurant-quality food, rapid preparation, digital technology and a nationwide service network, the partnership aims to create a new model for accessing CPK favorites outside traditional restaurant settings.

The planned deployment of up to 1,000 machines could ultimately give consumers across the country more opportunities to enjoy CPK menu items in places where a traditional restaurant is not available. The initiative marks another step in the brand’s long-term effort to expand beyond its conventional restaurant footprint and deliver convenient, premium food experiences wherever consumers gather.
