Pet Nutrition Expansion Nestlé Invests CHF 157 Million in Thailand

Nestlé is investing more than CHF 157 million to expand its pet food manufacturing capabilities in Thailand, strengthening the company’s production capacity for its Purina portfolio and positioning the business to respond to rising demand for high-quality pet nutrition across Asia and other international markets.

The investment will be directed toward Nestlé Purina’s manufacturing facility in Rayong, Thailand. The expansion is expected to significantly increase the site’s ability to produce pet food and pet treats for several of Purina’s leading brands, including Felix, Friskies, Pro Plan and Purina One. Products manufactured at the expanded facility will serve consumers in Thailand as well as customers in international markets, further reinforcing the country’s role in Nestlé’s global pet food manufacturing network.

Strengthening Pet Nutrition Production

Pet food has become one of Nestlé’s most important and fastest-growing business segments. The company said the category now accounts for approximately 21% of total Group sales, highlighting the strategic importance of pet care to its global portfolio.

Nestlé views the latest investment in Thailand as part of its broader strategy to expand manufacturing capacity in markets where pet ownership and demand for premium nutrition are increasing. The company expects the additional production capacity to help it respond more effectively to changing consumer preferences while improving its ability to supply Purina products across the region.

“Pet food is one of Nestlé’s most dynamic segments globally, accounting for around 21% of Group sales. This investment reflects our confidence in its long-term potential across Asia, Oceania and Africa (AOA) as well as the rest of the world,” said Remy Ejel, CEO of Nestlé Zone AOA.

Ejel added that Thailand represents an important component of Purina’s worldwide manufacturing network. By expanding production in Rayong, Nestlé aims to strengthen the supply chain and serve a growing number of pet owners seeking nutritious and high-quality products for their animals.

Rising Demand Across Asia, Oceania and Africa

The investment comes as pet ownership continues to expand across the Asia, Oceania and Africa region. As more households welcome cats and dogs into their homes, demand for convenient, nutritious and specialized pet food products is also increasing.

Consumer behavior is changing alongside the growth in pet ownership. Many pet owners are moving away from relying primarily on home-prepared meals and are increasingly turning to commercially produced pet food formulated to provide balanced nutrition. Premium pet food is particularly benefiting from this shift, as consumers demonstrate a willingness to invest in products designed to support their pets’ health and wellbeing.

The growing humanization of pets is another important factor behind the market’s development. Cats and dogs are increasingly regarded as members of the family, encouraging owners to pay closer attention to their diets, health and overall quality of life.

“With over 350 million domestic cats and dogs across AOA as well as a pet population that continues to grow, demand for high-quality pet nutrition is also increasing,” said Hubert Wieser, CEO of Nestlé Purina Petcare.

According to Wieser, health and wellness trends that have influenced human food consumption are increasingly extending into the pet food category. Pet owners are seeking products that address specific nutritional needs and support longer, healthier and more active lives.

This trend is contributing to greater demand for functional and specialized pet food products. Such offerings can include nutrition designed for particular life stages, breeds, sizes or health requirements. As consumers become more knowledgeable about animal nutrition, manufacturers are also under increasing pressure to provide products that combine quality ingredients with scientifically supported nutritional benefits.

Supporting Local Supply Chains

Beyond increasing production capacity, the Rayong investment is expected to create additional opportunities for local suppliers in Thailand.

Nestlé plans to use a high proportion of locally sourced raw materials in the expanded production operations. These materials are expected to include ingredients such as poultry, fish and vegetables.

Greater use of domestic raw materials could strengthen connections between the manufacturing facility and Thailand’s agricultural and food supply chains. It can also support local suppliers while creating additional value within the country’s economy.

For Nestlé, local sourcing can provide benefits beyond economic development. Building strong regional supply networks can help manufacturers improve supply-chain resilience and respond more efficiently to market demand. It also allows production facilities to draw on locally available ingredients while supporting the company’s broader efforts to develop its manufacturing footprint.

Thailand’s Growing Strategic Importance

The CHF 157 million investment further reinforces Thailand’s importance to Nestlé’s manufacturing operations.

The company already has a substantial production presence in the country and continues to invest in advanced manufacturing and distribution capabilities. In addition to the Purina expansion, Nestlé has announced plans to build a new high-tech Nescafé production and distribution hub in Thailand.

The combination of investments demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to the Thai market and its role as a strategic manufacturing base for both domestic and international demand.

For Purina, the expanded Rayong facility will provide additional capacity at a time when demand for pet food is increasing across the wider region. The investment is therefore expected to strengthen the company’s ability to supply established brands while providing greater flexibility to respond to future market growth.

Part of a Broader Global Pet Food Strategy

Nestlé’s latest investment in Thailand is also part of a wider program of investment in its global pet food manufacturing network.

The company recently committed CHF 520 million to a new pet food plant and logistics platform in Italy. Nestlé has also announced a USD 550 million investment in a new Purina factory in the United States, representing a major expansion of its production infrastructure in the country.

These investments reflect Nestlé’s expectations for continued long-term growth in the global pet care market. Rather than relying solely on existing manufacturing facilities, the company is expanding and modernizing its production network in strategic locations to increase capacity and improve supply capabilities.

The Thailand project adds an important Asian manufacturing component to that strategy. With pet ownership growing and consumer expectations becoming more sophisticated, additional manufacturing capacity can help Purina maintain product availability while responding to evolving demand.

Meeting the Next Generation of Pet Owners

The global pet food industry is undergoing a transformation as owners increasingly approach pet nutrition with the same level of attention they give to their own diets. Concerns around ingredients, nutritional value, health, wellness and longevity are becoming increasingly important when consumers select food for their animals.

Nestlé expects these trends to continue supporting growth in the pet care category. Its investment in Thailand positions the company to take advantage of these developments while expanding the availability of Purina products in both domestic and international markets.

The Rayong expansion also illustrates how changing consumer lifestyles are influencing food manufacturing investment. As pet ownership increases and animals become more closely integrated into family life, demand is shifting toward products that offer convenience while addressing specific nutritional and health needs.

With more than CHF 157 million committed to the project, Nestlé is significantly increasing its pet food manufacturing capabilities in Thailand. The investment will expand production of Felix, Friskies, Pro Plan and Purina One, strengthen local sourcing opportunities and support the company’s wider global pet care strategy.

As demand for premium and specialized pet nutrition continues to rise across Asia, Oceania and Africa, the expanded Rayong facility is expected to play an increasingly important role in Nestlé Purina’s ability to serve pet owners in Thailand and international markets.
