Bayer Partners with RAGT to Advance Hybrid Wheat Commercialization Targeting Early 2030s Launch
Bayer has taken a major step forward in its ambition to transform the global wheat seed market by entering into an exclusive licensing agreement with RAGT, one of Europe’s leading wheat seed companies. The partnership strengthens Bayer’s plans to commercialize hybrid wheat varieties across Europe and North America simultaneously by the early 2030s, marking a significant milestone in the company’s long-term agricultural innovation strategy.
Hybrid wheat is considered one of the biggest untapped opportunities in one of the world’s most important food crops. Through this agreement, Bayer aims to establish hybrid wheat as a major growth platform within its Crop Science portfolio, targeting potential annual revenues of up to €1 billion more than a decade after launch. The initiative aligns with Bayer’s broader strategy to expand beyond its current high-value agricultural solutions and develop new technology-driven franchises that address evolving challenges faced by farmers worldwide.
The agreement with RAGT provides Bayer with broad access to elite wheat germplasm specifically adapted to European growing conditions. This genetic foundation will support Bayer’s advanced breeding programs and strengthen its ability to develop high-performing hybrid wheat varieties designed to deliver improved productivity, sustainability, and resilience.
By combining RAGT’s expertise in wheat breeding and high-quality germplasm with Bayer’s extensive research capabilities, precision breeding technologies, seed production expertise, and digital agriculture solutions, the companies aim to accelerate the development of next-generation wheat varieties. These innovations are expected to help farmers manage increasingly difficult growing conditions caused by climate change, including rising temperatures, drought, and unpredictable weather patterns.
“Wheat is one of the most important staple food crops in the world. But wheat production has stagnated and is coming under pressure from prolonged drought and heatwaves, such as the one we just experienced in Europe,” said Peter Mueller, Cereals, Cotton, Canola/OSR & Biofuels Lead at Bayer’s Crop Science division. “At the same time, sturdier hybrid varieties of wheat are still not widely available. Our deal with RAGT is about to change that.”
Mueller emphasized that the partnership will combine RAGT’s strong wheat genetics and breeding knowledge with Bayer’s innovation capabilities to significantly expand its hybrid wheat pipeline. According to Bayer, the collaboration will enable the company to compete more effectively in a rapidly changing agricultural market while delivering greater value to growers across Europe and North America.
Sébastien Chatre, Head of R&D at RAGT, highlighted the importance of collaboration in advancing wheat innovation. “We’re very excited about the potential of this broad licensing agreement with Bayer, as it represents a significant step in RAGT’s commitment to innovation in wheat breeding,” Chatre said. “By sharing our expertise, we can accelerate the development of hybrid wheat solutions that will benefit the entire market and meet the evolving needs of farmers and the seed industry.”
Bayer Targets Hybrid Wheat Growth Across Europe and North America
Under the agreement, Bayer will focus primarily on winter wheat development for the European market. In North America, the company plans to introduce both spring and winter wheat hybrid varieties, building on the foundation of its established WestBred wheat business.

The genetic material Bayer will use in its breeding programs has broad potential application, covering more than 80% of wheat-growing areas across European countries and across multiple wheat classes in the United States. This extensive market opportunity provides Bayer with the ability to develop region-specific solutions that address the needs of diverse farming systems.
Bayer’s existing strength in wheat crop protection, combined with its customer relationships, breeding expertise, and digital farming capabilities, positions the company to create an integrated wheat production system. By connecting seeds, crop protection solutions, agronomic knowledge, and digital tools, Bayer aims to provide farmers with a complete approach to improving wheat productivity and sustainability.
Hybrid Wheat Offers Higher Yield Potential and Greater Climate Resilience
Hybrid wheat technology has the potential to significantly improve wheat production without requiring additional farmland or increased resource consumption. Bayer estimates that hybrid wheat varieties could deliver yield improvements of approximately 10% compared with conventional open-pollinated wheat during the early stages of commercialization, with further gains expected as breeding programs continue to advance.
Beyond yield improvements, hybrid wheat offers several agronomic advantages. Hybrid plants typically develop stronger root systems, faster early growth, and improved crop establishment, helping plants better withstand environmental stresses. These characteristics may contribute to improved tolerance against diseases, weeds, pests, drought, and heat conditions.
As climate challenges continue to affect agricultural productivity, farmers are increasingly seeking crop varieties that can deliver more consistent performance under difficult conditions. Hybrid wheat could play a crucial role in improving food security by helping growers produce more grain from existing farmland while adapting to changing environmental conditions.
Supporting Global Food Security Through Wheat Innovation
Wheat remains the world’s most widely cultivated food crop, covering more than 220 million hectares globally and providing a major source of calories for approximately 30% of the world’s population. As global demand for food continues to rise and wheat-growing regions face increasing climate pressures, the need for more productive and resilient wheat varieties is becoming more urgent.
Unlike crops such as corn, where hybrid technology is already widely established, hybrid wheat adoption remains relatively limited. Bayer believes this creates a significant opportunity to unlock new value for farmers, consumers, and the broader agricultural industry.
Through its collaboration with RAGT, Bayer is positioning hybrid wheat as a future cornerstone of its agricultural innovation strategy. By combining advanced breeding technologies, strong genetic resources, and global market expertise, the company aims to deliver wheat solutions that improve farm profitability, strengthen food supply chains, and support more sustainable agricultural production.
The partnership represents a significant investment in the future of wheat farming and highlights the growing importance of innovation-driven solutions to address global food and climate challenges.
